Okay thx guys. Was only asking as I’ve only kept to one buddy ,vaporeon, and that one finds candy on its own when I’ve given it candy to walk with me so i just wanted to clarify if the bar had to be filled or not.

Also I just realised it’s all part of it been a best buddy 🤦♀️🙄😂

You have to earn the candy by walking with them selected as your buddy (they do not need to be adventuring with you). This is shown at the bottom of their buddy screen (10km per candy).
If you feed your buddy three candies (or a golden razz) so they are **adventuring with you**, this is what earns them a heart up to three times each time you walk 2km with them. This is shown at the top their buddy screen.
The language the game uses for this is pretty confusing imo.

If you walk 19km with it and then use a poffin it will give you the first candy and you will only have to walk a bit further to obtain the second.

Walk 40km. Use as much poffins to reduce it
