Comparing The New Mega Evolution Expansion Sets To The Old Ones

So mega evolution cards were introduced in generation 6 with the xy expansion sets, and with the modernized return of mega cards in the mega evolution expansion, i wanted to compare and contrast each set’s a kin counterpart. When it comes to the xy sets, I’m mostly in chronological order when comparing them to the newer sets, and my pair will make more sense the more you read.

XY Base Set and Mega Evolution:

So I’m comparing mega evolution base set to xy base cause why wouldn’t I? Both introduce/reintroduce mega cards into the tcg, and they both even have a mega venusaur as one of the headliner mons. Only difference is that xy base set isn’t strictly focused on mega evolution and with a lot of the ealier xy sets, this was the case woth there being two mega pokemon cards 2-3 mega pokemon cards in a set usually until primal clash. Mega Evolution just set a foundation to reintroduce mega cards into the series, that’s why there are no normal ex cards in said set.

XY Flashfire and Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames:

It’s the charizard set. Biggest chase cards are a mega charizard x card, there’s no zard y card in phantasmal flames but a promo card for the set. These sets also feature a mega normal type pokemon. Kangaskhan for flash fire and Lopunny for phantasmsal flames. But it’s mainly the zard x card is what makes these sets so comparable.

XY Phantom Forces and Mega Evolutuon: Ascended Heroes:

Now this is an interesting comparison imo. Now after flash fire comes furious fist but that set is relatively unpopular and there’s bigger comparisons with phantom forces to ascended heroes. The thing with ascended heroes is that it’s a special set and a lot of the cards are reprints from older sets from the sv era and reprints from mega evolution, so one would say it’s not a fair comparison, but it’s fair eyes because of the collection boxes and the main chase card.

They both have a gengar chase card. The MAR and the SIR from Ascended Heroes are very sought after cards while phantom forces has the mega gengar secret rare and the gengar full art card. What also these do is a lot of experimentation. Phantom forces released a silver dialga card, a type card that has yet to be reintroduced in future sets. Ascended heroes does mega attack rares, which are basically a homage to the old mega ex cards with the big text on the card.

Back to the dialga card, the card in japanese wasn’t even part of the japanese version of phantom forces but was an add on to the english release. Ascended hero’s also has a card like that being the mega charizard y gold card, the card was an add on for the english release of the set as it’s not a card that’s featured in mega dream (japanese version of ascended heroes.)

These sets also introduced a unique amount of promo boxes, i know the phantom forces era had mega diancie and mega metagross premium collection boxes while ascended heroes had the mega lucario and mega gardevior mega attack rare promo boxes. Overall the hype regarding these two sets are very comparable and similar and that’s why i compared them to each other.

XY Primal Clash and Mega Evolution: Perfect Order:

Unlike the last comparison, this one is pretty straight forward, these sets are similar because they’re both loosely based on the newest games that were released at the time. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire for Primal Clash and Legends Z-A for Perfect Order. Headliner mons are strong mega evolved legendary pokemon (primal reversion isn’t mega evolution but it’s basically the same thing.) They even feature a mega evolved steel and fairy type, aggron and gardevoir for primal clash and skarmory and clefable for perfect order.

These two sets are also very big when it comes to the competitive tcg as far as I know as well. One last thing i’ll mention is that the comparison of these two sets is why I’m even comparing the xy sets to the mega evolution sets.

XY Roaring Skies and Mega Evolution: Chaos Rising:

Now the last comparison i’ll do is roaring skies and chaos rusing, now as the time I’m making this post, chaos rising isn’t out yet in english yet but we know enough about the cards in the set to make a reasonable comparison. Biggest thing about this set is that this set features really popular pokemon and the card for said pokemon become the primary chase card. Rayquaza for roaring skies and greninja for chaos rising. This set also both feature deoxys cards and mega gallade cards. (The japanese version of chaos rising doesn’t have a mega gallade card but the english set is most likely to have it.)

Both sets also have mega dragons, (besides mega rayquaza) Latios for roaring skies and dragalge for chaos rising.

Ok so those are all of the comparisons, when more sets of the mega evolution expansion comes out, i may do a sequel post comparing the mega evolution sets to the rest of the xy sets.
