If you’ve been a Nintendo fan at any point and have dabbled in the creepier side of things, you’ve probably know of the “[Who Are You Running From?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4YYfPjf5tM)” easter eggs from the Game Boy Camera. They’re a bunch of incredibly creepy images of vandalized faces with the caption “Who are you running from?”. They’ve traumatized many a kid (including me) who’s either used the console or saw a Youtube video or Top 10 list referencing them.
Although they’re commonly now thought to be just a weird form of creator cameos (at the very least, the Kiss-looking one seems to have a very similar facial structure to Hirokazu Tanaka), no one seems to know why they’re so creepy or what they’re referencing. Well, I think I got it figured out!
**I think they’re a reference to the cover of the Talking Heads album “Burning Down The House”.** Just comparing the [cover](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/bd/f7/df/bdf7dfa75d93c6258708025dbf8c7bd2.png) with the [GBC screens](https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/c_fill,f_auto,fl_progressive,g_center,h_675,pg_1,q_80,w_1200/vvwtnlmqajo07dgnsdn6.jpg) immediately makes it clear. It could just be a coincidence because I don’t know how popular they were in Japan at the time, but I think it’s worth pointing out.
