This game released back in June with virtually zero fanfare, and recently it went on sale at 40% off [on the eShop](https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/super-cable-boy-switch) (currently selling for $9), so I decided to pick it up, and wow am I ever glad I did.
If you are a fan of challenging Platformers like Super Meat Boy or Celeste, this game will be right up your alley, but it does some fun and interesting things with its visuals and gameplay.
On the presentation side of things, Super Cable Boy has a visual motif comparable to an old-school monochrome Game Boy game, but the backgrounds add in personality with beautiful gradient colors, some excellent animations, and subtle use of 3D to build that motif into something more visually-interesting.
On the gameplay side of things, everything starts off simple enough with just a jump and wall jump, but shortly into the game, you start gaining “cartridges” you can swap out for different special abilities – a grappling hook, a triple jump, and so on. You only have one of these abilities active at any given time, but you can swap them out at any time, even mid-jump. This means you need to have some degree of dexterity to swap between the abilities you want to use to chain them.
The level design here is excellent, giving players a fair amount of challenge, and providing optional collectables for players really looking to push themselves.
I am utterly stunned that no one is talking about this game – it has barely any reviews listed on Metacritic, fewer than 50 player reviews on Steam, and yet it truly is a game I feel is a hidden gem that should absolutely be played. If you’re a fan of great challenging Platformers, I highly recommend you give this game a try while it’s on sale.
