Splatoon 2 got its first, and only, [paid DLC expansion](https://youtu.be/NBr6GqyuWnA) in June 2018. And it was all about Octolings. And apparently it’s pretty goddamn hard. Rather than more basic platforming levels like the base campaign, Octo Expansion is instead broken up into challenges. You take on the role of an Octoling in the deepsea metro, trying to get back up to the surface by clearing challenges and collecting four “thangs” for a talking sea cucumber. Don’t worry, it makes way more sense when you actually try it.
And those challenges were apparently no joke. Critics and fans took note of the heightened challenge that actually takes advantage of the various weapons and specials at your disposal. Many even go as far as to call it one of the best DLCs they’ve ever played. And it’s all wrapped together in a delightful neon aesthetic and a ton of new story and lore to the franchise. And it all caps off with a special superboss that’ll really make you want to throw your entire Switch out the window.
Here’s hoping Splatoon 3’s “large scale paid DLC content” coming down the line will live up or even exceed the standards set by this one. I’ve yet to play it myself, but what did you think of this expansion?
