The chip shortage is real and the number one reason we won’t see new Hardware from Nintendo in the short-term.

    Not just the shortage:

    > For Nintendo Switch hardware, we reduced our forecast by 2.00 million units to 19.00 million units. While there is a gradual improvement in semiconductor and other component supplies and a recovery trend in hardware manufacturing for Nintendo Switch, taking into consideration production **and sales performances thus far**, we have modified the Nintendo Switch hardware sales units forecast for the fiscal year.

Nintendo is calling out both chip shortages, and declining sales. Which isn’t a surprise, really. It’s an aging console, so the long decline in hardware sales has begun.

I think it’s safe to say the pandemic and chip shortage have added an extra year or two to the Switch’s lifespan.

It was obvious the slowing of sales was not due to the chip shortages even when they said it was a few months ago.. every single switch model is widely available at retail on store shelves, plenty of them and have been since the beginning of the year. Of course they have still been selling quite well but if the shelves are always full it means that the demand is lower than the supply. Nintendo is just running out of people to sell a switch to, and given the 2 year hardware cycle Nintendo has been on for years now and the fact that Zelda TotK is coming next year it will not be surprising when we see new Nintendo hardware next year (pro or successor) imo

  5. This was inevitable. It’s not cause for panic. No one console rules forever. The Switch is 5+ years old – it’s peaked.

Now we just wait and see how long Nintendo rides things out. Do they try to get another few years out of the Switch with a Pro revamp? Do they instead choose to coast for a year or two off their huge install base while prepping the next huge thing?

There’s no way Nintendo is getting back into the dedicated TV console market at this point. Their next machine will certainly be another handheld. It’s just a question of when, how powerful, and what unique gimmick they bolt on.

If Nintendo wants to sell more Switches, they need to have a genuine price drop or frequent sales, or they need a real hardware refresh. Everyone knows the switch is old and massively underpowered especially when you compare it to the new consoles. It’s time

So…. When is a factory in the US going to start making these chips and exporting them?

So much for that chip initiative eh Joe?

Idk how, every store near me has them in stock, sells out within the week and gets more in by the end of the week. They’re always selling out by me

I think there is a 90% chance they release a Switch Pro next year, in May. Yeah Tears of the Kingdom will be the first game to take advantage of the hardware. Mainly, you get 4K thanks to DLSS and an SSD for elimination of load times, which is actually important for modern Zelda. Not many cared but BotW had hefty load times from shrine to overworld. I think the portable screen stays 1080 but is bigger (less bezel). I think Nintendo discontinues the OG Switch and just sells 4K Switch at $400, OLED at $350, and the Lite at $200.

Huh, I would’ve expected it to be called a “crisps shortage” because I assumed they learned British English, not American.
