After the last two events being really kind, I was able to finally (as with many others) after many months of waiting able to get the 5 Gulpin required to finish step 5/9. Then 6/9 was also fairly easy to finish due to the current event research containing the required Exeggcute too and I got lucky with the rolls on the reward.
However, back to waiting on this one haha annoyingly Drowzee were everywhere the other week and I’ve seen a few Scyther around too. Hoping I can pick one up again soon, but its been an age since I’ve seen a Cubone.
I have an Aerodactly stacked on my field research waiting for when step 8/9 comes around, along with trying to grind for the other fossil field research and get them stacked. Although I get quite lucky with Lileep on my daily insense.

Cubone is spawning everywhere right now, Drowzee only needs 50 candy and Scyther can be caught from 3 star raids that come back pretty often.

I am in the same task. I just caught the cubone but I need a drowzee to evolve (the one I had I evolved long ago) and a 3* scyther to evolve as well (I don’t bother with lower stars unless shiny, legendary, or event Pokémon)… the issue is I only ever saw like 1 scyther and caught it and it is CRAP

I was lucky and got a Drowzee traded. Cubone spawned quite quickly and I still held s Scyther.

This is one of those missions you just leave back and ignore. I was very fortunate in that when I got it done I got a really good Meltan, but aside from that there’s no point in stressing over getting it done. It will happen, the Pokémon you need are seasonal/weather spawns, or obtainable by raids or team rocket encounters
As others have mentioned here Meltan is easily obtained by the mystery box method.

I think some rocket grunts can have shadow scythed but that might be changed. You are going to need luck for cubone and drowzee
