Played this on the PSP back in high school. Made it decently far but didn’t really understand everything.

Can’t wait to get back into it now that I’m older and—allegedly—smarter

  2. GramboWBC

Hmm. Never got to play this one back in the day. So it’s ff tactics before there was ff tactics?

Im happy to see a good review and the negatives are in line with my thoughts as well that the smoothed over pixels are a step backwards for the art style.

    From the review:

“The other major issue is the visuals. While the high-resolution character portrait artwork looks fantastic, the upscaling of the sprite art leaves something to be desired as it looks like a particularly bad filter has been applied. I got used to it after a while, but compared to amazing HD-2D reworkings like Live A Live–another Square Enix title–Tactics Ogre Reborn feels plain by comparison.”

“Too much tactics and not enough Ogre representation.”

  5. MAXIMAL_GABRIEL

Hopefully this sells well enough to encourage an Ogre Battle Remaster.

Has anyone here who pre-ordered through square enix received any shipping information?

  7. JamAndDai

Kinda crazy to imagine that this game originally released on the Super Nintendo.

This was likely going to be my next purchase, but knee-deep in Triangle Strategy and then Persona went on sale. So guess I get to this in (mid) 2023. I missed these games despite having a SNES/PSP etc back in the day though, so am excited they are coming to the Switch.

  9. CommonMilkweed

I really prefer this art style over Triangle Strategy. There’s something visually unappealing about TS, whereas this seems brighter and easier to read. I’m hoping they stick with this style going forward for their ‘retro’ themed games.

  10. Please do FFT next, with the same level of love!

  11. Lawnfrost

Not making this in HD-2D was a mistake. Damn this could have looked SOooooooo graphically good.

Still buying on release day, just noting the missed opportunity.

  12. Rumham89

I’m stoked to play this again, don’t usually buy games at full price, but I’m here in hopes good sales will equate to an Ogre Battle revival.

my psp still works, i dusted it off and played this game last year. still holds up great, although of course it shows its age a bit. i own this, jeanne d’arc and also FFT. psp was ahead of its time, such a great system, i hope we get more quality handhelds like the switch.

my advice is to check out a strategy guide, as it takes time to build up classes/learn abilities and if you go down a wrong path it can take a while to fix it later. there are lots online that will help you with stuff like that without spoiling the game.

  14. Another_Road

I can’t wait to get this game. Never played Tactics Ogre but FFT is one of my favorite games of all time.

  15. Is this a remastered knights of lotus? I remember loving that game on GBA

  16. ApocApollo

Is it me, or does some of the pixel art look really blurred together? Almost like AI upscaling.

  17. Still not sure if to get it on PS5 or Switch. I love the portability, hoping it runs well.

  18. MOM_Critic

I never played it on SNES or PSP. I’m hoping it’s good. This one definitely seems like more of a remastering than a fully fledged remake. It’s the same price as Live A Live was in my country, which definitely had the remake feel to it. (Full 2D:HD)

Am I wrong in saying this? Like I said I never played the PSP version, just going based off the videos I’ve seen on it for switch, it looks at least to me more similar to the previous version than something like Live A Live.

Now to be fair, the PSP one already was a remaster. Maybe if Live A Live had one too it would look less drastic. Regardless mine is shipping today, looks like Amazon got their shit together. I got Live A Live and RuneFactory 5 late despite early preorders lol

  19. NerdyCanadianDad

Now that they did this, I would love to see Ogre Battle 64!!

  20. GundamXionaz

Question: As a notorious grinder of tactics games, will I be able to over level my team? XD

  21. Do we know if this runs at 60 FPS on switch and any graphical differences between Ps5 and switch. Debating if I should go switch or ps5.

  22. begselwalch

Everything sounds great but I do wish the visual presentation was better. This is a game you can sink hundreds of hours into, it should look at least somewhat appealing. Blurred sprites, washed-out colours, weird font choices that not only don’t fit the atmosphere but also clash with each other…this game is really bad to look at. The character portraits look pretty good and the cover art is downright gorgeous but these make the rest look even worse in comparison.

Considering the price and the legacy of the game this remaster has no business looking like a throwaway mobile game.

  23. LordOfDemRangs

Do Ogre Battle games next! Especially Ogre Battle 64! Will be buying tactics Ogre!

  24. _Broseidon

Wow this reviewer gave it an 8 basically because:

    1) Didn’t like party wide level cap which prevents ability to grind/overlevel (Personally I think this is a great feature, bc it will force you to get more out of the hours you put into the game)

    2) Doesn’t like the HD makeover of the original pixel sprite art style (Seems like a very personal preference)

Those are relatively minor things to the standard SRPG audience so safe to say this is a great freaking game.

  25. owlinspector

Had this on the old PSone. Fabulous game, beat it and the 100-level optional dungeon. Would be great to experience again but I’m not sure I have the time. I remember it as a significant time sink, **far** more involved and tricky than modern sRPG:s like Fire Emblem (which I love too). Keeping every character on a the same lv was a pain, I hope they fixed that (one level made a significant difference and enemies always had the same level as your **highest** leveled character).

  26. Thanalan_Wanderer

This is going to be the perfect SteamDeck/Switch game.

  27. GuyNamedJason

If I’m “basically” (not entirely but close, I enjoyed Advance Wars for instance, but never got a chance to play FFT) new to SRPG – is the barrier for entry for this going to push me away before the positive aspects of the genre and the game itself can hook me?

I recognize it’s subjective, but just ballpark it from your perspective as many of you seem to know the classic version well. I tried out the demo of TS earlier today and just got exhausted from the dialogue and exposition. One fight in an hour+ just drug it down…

But I don’t want to end up with something that’s too complex, difficult, inaccessible, etc… and thus the reward for the time is far off or unreachable… I’m 44 with a toddler – so I love the idea of something like this for Switch in particular, although I have a PS5.

Appreciate the help… regardless if you tell me to stay away, I hope everybody digs it.

  28. Vandelier

TO:LUCT is one of my favorite TBSRPGs of all time, but I’m not sure I’ll be picking this one up.

The PSP ver. has an absolutely incredible fan patch called One Vision that all but perfects the game balance, turning it into an even more amazing experience. So, the biggest selling point of Reborn – improved balance – is already satisfied for me.

I’ll definitely pick it up if there’s any new content, though.

  29. AlterEgo3561

Can’t wait to play this. Really though I wish they would do a remaster of FFT.

  30. Drathbun89

Wait is this the same as Ogre Battles?!? Because Ogre Battle 64 was my jam. I will buy this now if can.

  31. Tactics Ogre Knights of Lodis was my favorite GBA game of all time. Can’t wait to play this!

  32. spearandfang

I played the original and PlayStation and psp version it is my all time favorite game I sunk so many hours into this game and can’t wait to do it again as a 42 yr old man . Enjoy this game you guys story is awesome.

  33. Omnomnomnivor3

How would you guys compare it to Triangle Strategy? Playing TS atm in switch

  34. unc1ebuttcheeks

It’s better this way. The original release didn’t have level caps but, enemy units scales with the unit in your party who has the highest level. So, if you made a mistake and Canopus kills that last enemy with a crit and you were only counting on him hitting for small damage , guess what he levels up.

Now you have to train your entire party to that level, well you don’t have to but I remember the game is pretty challenging. A one level difference between you and enemy units is big.

Anyway I’m saying it sounds like a quality of life change and I hope that part of the game is less tedious and saving is more gamer friendly aka saves during battle

  35. Possibly the best game on the Nintendo Switch now. It is truly a masterpiece.
