I’m really enjoying all the cancelled games DYKG have been covering lately. Hopefully some day they’ll even be able to fill in the big ol’ blank regarding what Retro was up to in between finishing Tropical Freeze and taking over Prime 4.

Good Lord, considering the state of the Metroid fandom in 2007, that tactics game would have been dead in the water the instant it was announced. They would have ripped it apart. The old-guard “2D Master Race” fan base was still very strong at that time.

“what would we even have done with it?”
Take the smash engine, turn it into a mission based game with a symphony of the night style map(like mega man 0/zx would later do) add a mgs mission support staff of radio calls incase you get lost, and add a gimmick of aiming by changing where you grip the controller like Other M, but not shitty-
You use the d pad to move like a snes controller. But you jump into first person mode with the center grip and aim when you need to, using the Z trigger for a target lock that you flick the stick to change targets; making that thumb stick literally feel like samus’ steadying hand on her arm cannon.
Missions are sometimes puzzle or action based, cept when they involve horror or reconaissance of a new area. when you finish a mission you have the option of warping out or continuing on to map out the area in a freeplay exploration and gathering of warp points.
Make the game about a chozo bounty hunter who shows up to be samus’ rival, turns out to be mother brain in a samus cloned body using metroid dna.
Oh and make a trick that if the game detects a finished metroid 2 in the expansion pack slot, theres a hidden ending and you start in zero suit.
Boom. Metroid 64. Call it a day. Someone get me 4 bottles of sake and a delorean and we’ll go to nintendo ead,1997 and make it happen.
