Could have been good but instead was a greedy grindfest full of FOMO to get people to spend

I think live-service won’t work on kart games for consoles simply because Mario Kart 8 offers phenomenal content now with the booster pass..for nothing more once you purchase the game+booster.
What’s unfair is seeing CTR and Sonic Racing not getting momentum despite being very fun and excellent in the business model. Mario kart is king
Good luck disney who is working on a MK-rival..
DarkKirby14
the game had many problems despite the fact that it had promise
jklantern
I so wanted Chocobo GP to be good. Shortly before release, I was so prepared to get it. I love the aesthetic of the Chocobo Dungeon franchise, and I wanted this to be a success so that we could get more of them. But they made it so reliant on microtransactions, so I never picked it up.
christhebrain
One of the most arrogant game releases I have ever seen.
ShaboPaasa
dang square enix on a roll lately, huh?
Hestu951
Another attempt at greedy monetization fails. Time for a celebration, maybe with Mario Kart 8.
KartRacerBear
It still astounds me that you had to buy the game AND the Battle Pass. Greedy as fuck.
Fitzy0728
Does this mean we can now unlock stuff without 6 thousand micro transactions?
SE is so stupid I would have bought this full price day 1 but the micro transactions were an instant turn off and instead they got exactly $0 from me

I was so looking forward to this game when it was first announced since I was a huge fan of the first one as a kid. I even remember they were going to make a sequel for the 3DS, which I’m thinking about more and more often because it’s pretty likely it would’ve been a standalone release without all the anti-consumer practices.
I mean, the first game had an easy, reliable method of unlocking various secret characters that celebrate FF’s history, and this just had shameless cash grabs right out the gate. Sometimes I wonder if I’m an elitist or out of touch for preferring games that don’t have modern things like battle passes or significant online functionalities but stuff like this makes it easy to be more sure of my beliefs. Those systems certainly have their place, but all it did for this game was cripple it and make sure it’ll be easily forgotten.

I didn’t even know this was a real thing.
grahamaker93
Glad it died. Every live service game that don’t succeed is every single day we delay the inevitable.
the_fuego
Good, now green light a fourth Tomb Raider and get that shit done well.
vid_icarus
Square Enix has some of the most exploitative pay models for their live service games and it reflects in how quickly they always get shut down. Their mobile offerings are a graveyard of fantastic games completely destroyed by paywalls and addiction mechanics designed to hook whales for as much as possible as fast as possible. Square has brands and creators gamers feel passionate about and they are happy to exploit that to not only wreck good games but squeeze the player for every last cent to boot.
DuelistDeCoolest
I mean I would have bought it if it was like Mario Kart. But no, they had to inject a bunch of bullshit into it and I chose to avoid it.
redgyarados21
This game had trouble written all over it from the start.
Meteoric_Chimera
This is a total win for players, as they’re making everything unlockable now instead of microtransactions. The game can finally turn into what it should have been all along!
tinopa6872
Square enix showed their hand a while ago. Its profit over playability all day.
skybogt
Squeenix wants success but doesn’t want to take any risks to get it lol
kuniovskarnov
Another online game Square just shut down.
At least you can still play the game afterwards. Seems like its a normal video game now.
IDoAllMyOwnStuns
Make a shit product, get shit results.

I don’t really care for cart racers that aren’t Mario kart. But this one was way off my radar.
SystemSpark
I’ve played this game since launch. The rocky launch coupled with poor advertising likely doomed it from the get go. That said, I’ve played it, enjoyed it, and unlocked every racer and every vehicle without spending money or feeling grinded. The Mythril is mainly for unlocking the season pass, music tracks, colors, stickers, and costumes, so primarily vanity items. In Season 1, Cloud was locked into the season pass, but still attainable as they gave everyone Mythril to access the pass off the get go. They quickly changed the GP Racing system in Season 2 (likely due to the bad press), and characters and vehicles were purchasable via easily earned tickets. Thus, the season pass was really only good for Gil, and Gil is really only good for colors and backgrounds (with one or two exceptions). They gave/give a monthly stipend of Mythril, so I ended up getting every costume. The Mythril thing was blown out of proportion as it didn’t give you any advantages in racing, so it was never Pay to Win, more just Pay to Style.
Overall, I feel that it’s a great game and had plenty of potential. While it isn’t far off from a Mario Kart game, I feel like there’s more strategy involved in the races and tracks. Character abilities created different play styles, keeping the game relatively fresh and competitive. They were supposed to release new tracks every season, but we only ended up only getting two.
As an aside; I routinely see people playing and winning with the base characters that you can use in the free version, so any unlocked/purchased characters really just boil down to preferences. It’s worth noting that some characters have been re-balanced over time, so some racers were a bit more popular at times. Presently, each race seems to be pretty varied, it’s not just 8 Clouds racing every match.
THE_GR8_MIKE
This was that $60 game with horrendous mobile game mechanic horseshit, right?
kolt437
Thank you Square, very cool
TyleNightwisp
Square is such an absolute clown of a company nowadays. I’ve been buying less and less stuff from them as they keep showing how greedy and soulless they can be.
SpiritRelative6410
SE is on a tear publishing shitty titles barely worth anyone’s time
AmazingAgent
Can someone give a rundown on what the game was? I didn’t catch it when it came out so I’m unsure what the monetization was.
_JoeK
Square Enix keeps proving they won’t keep up with their live service games. Everyone should keep this in mind whoever they relase something new in the future.
Flandersmcj
Just send the Chocobos to Mario Kart!
DiceCubed1460
Pay-to-win mario kart with worse gameplay, worse graphics, less map diversity, etc. I feel sorry for the poor sods who bought this game
CranberryPuffCake
I was really interested in buying this. Still might, is it not worth it now? I don’t care for grinding etc but if it’s still fun I’d give it a shot.
TheAlbacor
Oh no! Anyway…
Zephorixianoth
I regret buying this game it was bad from day 1

is there something i dont know about this game? I played the free version since release, won MANY races and got plenty of in game currency to unlock things for my chocobo. decided to buy the full game when it was on sale for 50% off only a week ago and unlocked several racers and other things by simply playing the story mode. where are these micro transactions? where are these greedy money pits? I thought the game was really fun and plenty available to people even if they just wanted to play the free version. just by racing you get plenty of in game currency, i didnt even play for several months and i still have plenty. i dont understand this hate that spurred this cancellation?

What happened to Square Enix? Where’s all this greed coming from?
Jinzo126
I was actually excited for the Game, never played the original and thought its just the same game with better graphics. Thankfully Nintendo came to the rescue with the MK8 Booster Pass.
stormdog
This is the formula for all Square Enix mobile games. If it isn’t making profit, then it gets axed within a few months.
Rinse and repeat until they create one that clicks with consumers. There’s basically no point getting invested in a Japanese mobile game unless it’s survived longer than a year.
Zero_fon_Fabre
I liked the game. Could’ve been better if it didn’t have all the unnecessary bullshit.
SnottNormal
I probably would have picked this up if it was just a cleaned up rerelease of the PS1 game. 🙁
Ilovetogame2
Square Enix has been taking some Ls recently. FFVII The First Soldier, Selling their western studio, NFTs and now this just to name a few. 🙁
DiO_93
That’s my SQ! You can count on these dudes to release games an then proceed to sh*t on ’em when it isn’t making 10x the profit they were expecting. Consoles Dissidia NT comes to mind. They always doing this with mobile games too. They already killed like three FF games I was playing.
Sivick314
people ignore SE disgusting cash grab. i couldn’t be happier.
