I admit that I already heard about this shortly after the release of Metroid Dread, when the company started recruiting again, for future projects, some spanish leakers said that MS had reached an agreement with Nintendo for another game on Switch (they didn’t specify metroid, but…). But let’s put some context to the situation
As a result of an economic crisis that the study had (years ago), they planned a new strategy to save the company, they would make a third-party game (not proprietary IP) that would keep the study economical and then they would make their own game to grow as a study, which would be a bet. This strategy has been implemented since Castlevania but without much success in their own projects such as “Raiders of the Broken Planet” (it was not a bad game but its monetization model…) which later became F2P called “Spacelords” (not success)
After the good reception of critics and public of the non-own game “Metroid Dread”, they decided to make another personal adventure but this time accompanied by a small Italian company (like them) called 505 Games, provisionally called “Project Iron” a third person fantasy game.

The agreement that they had signed with Nintendo a few months after finishing Dread would mean the next game (not their own) that would sustain the viability of the company in case their own games failed.
That agreement sounded very strong in Spain, but 1 year has passed and nothing more has been heard from, until a few days ago. A leaker known especially for Nintendo news and who has hit several times including Metroid Dread, has posted that we can expect New Metroid 2D by Mercury Steam in 2025.

***What is your opinion?***
That there is a new Nintendo Switch game by Mercury Steam, it is taken for granted in Spain (and everyone is almost sure that it is a new Metroid) but it does not fit me to release a game for Switch by 2025… when surely on those dates Let’s have the Switch 2… I hope Nintendo doesn’t do to Mercury Steam what they did with Samun Return and the 3DS… which affected sales a lot.

Yeah don’t rush the next switch. Practice patience, grab a next Gen console if you think the switch is inefficient. I’m just tired of everyone barking about the switch 2.
Even if Switch 2 comes out in 2024/2025, hopefully it’s backwards compatible and they would just make this theoretical game cross gen.
Why on Switch 1? Because there isn’t a Switch 2.
There is not a Switch 2 and it still sells better than anything
I’d like to see Nintendo move on from MercurySteam. I’m tired of their melee combo being shoehorned into a series that was better without it.
I don’t really see the purpose in a Switch 2. It’s not going to be able to keep up with the PS5 and S/X while remaining portable (The PS5 has huge fans and vents just to keep it from overheating).
I mean, a new console will come eventually, but the current model is still selling like hot cakes.
OP MercurySteam is spanish, not italian.
Also by 2025 Switch 2 would be *at most* 1 year old, crossgen games will continue for years.
Didn’t Yoshio Sakamoto say that with Dread, his planned Metroid story is complete.
I feel like a new game based after that story, Samus would be OP with her new powers. I guess we will see.
I bought a Switch Oled because of Metroid Dread and it was worth it. So whatever Mercury Steam does next in the genre then I’ll be there day one.
Also I wouldn’t be too worried about it being stuck on the Switch.
People forget that Nintendo has always been huge on backwards compatibility when keeping the same format. Going from Wii U to Switch just messed up people’s perceptions.
If there is a Switch 2, why wouldn’t they just make it backwards compatible? It shouldn’t be hard with how weak the hardware is. Could have it release like BotW, the ass end of 1 console and the start of another.
I will be extremely disappointed if the Switch 2 is not backwards compatible.
Same reason why Samus Returns was on 3DS
