It’s possible you fought it in a raid and lost, or you could have missed it with GO+, but that’s pretty unlikely.

You may have seen it in a gym or someone else had that Pokémon and you “saw” it in a raid. I like to see the Pokémon in the gyms near me, so that way it opens up my Pokédex a little more vs just having the Pokémon number.

You most likely didn’t miss it. I have over 40 pokemon like that in my Pokédex. Alot of them are regionals, or other pokemon that don’t really spawn in the wild. I think what happens is, if you fight then in pvp or a gym or battle with someone who has then in a raid. You discover them. Kinda like in the main series games where, if you fight or encounter one they will appear in your Pokédex but you can’t see all the info

Pokémon you’ve caught appear in color. Pokémon you’ve seen but haven’t caught appear as silhouettes; this includes Pokémon seen during encounters as well as at Gyms. Pokémon you’ve neither seen nor caught appear as their Pokédex number.
From Niantic official page. Since legendaries cannot defend gyms, you most certainly have missed it with an auto catcher.

I also have Mesprit as seen and I don’t use any auto catcher. Never encountered it either.

Azelf, Mesprit &Uxie are available in the wild regionally. They are very rare but they do spawn. I live in NYC and one Azelf spawns just about every day.

This is why I don’t use POGO+. I prefer manual catching for this exact reason.

Probably just seen in a gym. Have quite few of those in my dex including regionals can’t find here.

I checked my kid’s dex as he has tons of missing entries and there are dozens and dozens of these seen: 1 entries. I was thinking maybe seeing a mon protecting a gym counted, but Azelf can’t so I dunno. Maybe if a friend has one as their buddy and you saw their profile?

This happened to me as well, last time it was posted on the subreddit but it doesn’t necessarily mean you lost it with autocatch. I forget how, but there’s another reason it can happen.
I’m also in the same boat but wasn’t using autocatch, until after I saw the dex entry, so.

It used to be registered as “seen” when they put in in a gym as a defender. But I noticed this 3 years ago. Not sure if it still in effect.

Was probably in a gym. I notice if you look at things in a gym it counts towards seen.

A go plus will buzz differently if it detects a pokemon you haven’t registered. It would be hard to not notice this as long as you were actually using it and not using it as a makeshift gotcha. Are you sure you didn’t battle in a raid and failed to catch it?

I think if you raid or battle with someone using one it can come up as seen when you’ve never encountered it in the wild
