Fun fact: Advance Wars didn’t see any action because Nintendo and IS thought there wasn’t as much potential with character relationships like Fire Emblem (Eurogamer)

Well considering the best selling fire emblem is 50% dating sim they made the right choice
Minimum_Poetry8193
Tbh maybe it’s just me but I wouldn’t mind Advance Wars being basically like Fire Emblem but more real world warfare with relationship building ngl
Riomegon
Jokes on them, Ship girls and Tank girls are all the rage now.
Sentinel10
Honestly, I’d say it was a valid concern. The fact that every unit you use in Fire Emblem is a character complete with personality and a story makes for a more invested playthrough, especially if its characters you like.
In Advance Wars, the only characters are the commanders, with all playable units as faceless mooks. I can see why some people might not find that interesting.
It creates quite the gameplay shift too, as Fire Emblem had an emphasis on keeping your units alive, while getting units killed in diversions and such is a legit strategy in AW.
gszr89
It’s different from Fire Emblem, Andy and the others don’t fight, you use the units your army has. It’s a different type but Andy is a good character and they could also use him in Super Smash making him sending different units at every attack.
superyoshiom
Wasn’t there a really edgy-looking advance wars on the DS a good while back? I remember my dad getting it for my cousin along with Shrek 3 when I was a kid.
onyxbug
That void has been filled for me by the Valkyria Chronicles video games.
DGB31988
I prefer the chess feel of Advance Wars and the OG Fire Emblem on GBA. I don’t enjoy the story as much.
davidbrit2
That fact isn’t fun at all.
isekai-coffee
i would prefer games focus on the actual game mechanics and less of ‘character relationships’.
Darnell5000
Make the characters sexier: problem solved
GottaFindThatReptar
Couldn’t care less about character interactions, give me more AW.
frozenfade
I just want that advanced wars switch game they put on indefinite hold.
Brutalitor
Any strategy games coming out like FE that DON’T rely on some cringey jank social aspect? I love Fire Emblem but I cannot stand the cringe anime characters and the reliance on talking with them. I just want some strategy.
easywriter
Nintendo’s take is kind of ironic because I’m exactly the opposite: I can’t stand Fire Emblem for all the ridiculous melodrama and endless chatty ‘relationship” nonsense it has.
Advance Wars is fun to me because the tactics are tight, it’s got some depth (but too much), the game plays fast, and the character designs are hilarious.
Nintendo shouldn’t think of FE and AW as an “either or” situation, but as appealing to two separate markets who both like very different styles of wargame.
secret3332
Sometimes I read these interviews with Japanese devs and just go ??? wondering if there was a mistranslation or if they are just that out of touch.
I dont think anyone wants social sim aspects added to Advance Wars. I get that that is a big part of Fire Emblem, and Fire Emblem is very popular now. But adding that to Advance Wars would just make it a worse FE and idk if it would even have an audience at that point.
There are plenty of strategy games that exist and are successful without having RPG elements, social interactions, dating, etc.
XenoGalaxias
I mean you play AW for engaging strategic multiplayer player with your friends. FE has never had good multiplayer.
TwEE-N-Toast
Ugh, thats a lame reason. The gameplay was why I was into these games not to ship anime characters or have tea time.
Memphisrexjr
I personally don’t like fire emblem but love advance wars. I wish we got a little of both instead of one side of the scale.
M4err0w
That is not exactly untrue.
Guy-Manuel
I guess love can’t bloom on the battlefield
DarkAres02
Just have the COs get support conversations
slapula
I really wish they’d rip out support conversations in Fire Emblem. These characters are *never* as interesting as the developers think they are.
DharmaBat
In other words, they couldn’t exploit the thirst for waifus as hard.
Shnazzyone
I’m okay with there being no dating mechanics in my RTS
_guac
I’d rather not get attached to the infantry I’m sending out as meat shields, so I approve of this decision.
Bad-dee-ess
Character relationships are the reason new Fire Emblems don’t appeal to me. Why can’t they have Advance Wars just be the tactical gameplay?
politirob
You know what the alternative to character development is?
Gear. Give me tons of gear and equipment upgrades and let me customize and tinker my little tanks and weapons and vehicles. Reward me with cool models and art and animations, make me fall in love with the stuff I build and feel the burn and loss when I lose them in battle.
the_harvan
I feel like the Dual Strike format of two COs at once would lend itself well to this
arr4ws
Advance wars dual strike is my favorite game on the DS, and there was a lot of great game on the DS
pocketMagician
Really hate IS pandering to the VN crowd. Maybe I just want a simple game about tanks and shit. Maybe I just wanna play a strategy war game with a light story. Haven’t they considered that could be just as profitable but cheaper to make? Why do they have to keep making every game to be the Two Towers it’s a frigging video game.
Meloku171
Ok, let’s give it a shot (even though I think it’s a stupid idea)…
… Do Wargroove.
Yep. Do Wargroove. Make COs be deployable on the battlefield. Give them AoE CO abilities. CO pairs buff each other when within a range from each other. Make the pair buffs stronger on Story Mode depending on how much time they spend together within each other’s buff area. Give them special interaction curscenes after each battle. You’ll need to replay the SP campaign several times to see every single cutscene. You can keep the basic buff in MP for tactic reasons.
Metal_B
I always thought, that this is the biggest issue with Advance Wars. The COs are just to far removed from the battlefield and occupy a space outside the action. Days of Ruine tried to put them unto the battlefield, but there was no visual difference and just a limited effect on them.
Wargroove had the good approach to mix some aspect from Advance Wars with Fire Emblem by having Hero Units. Still the hero units are to strong and to vulnerable (them getting killed is a losing condition) to make the fit the gameplay style of expendable units.
Having commanders in battle, but them dying not affecting the mission (like Days of Ruine), and have unique visual and abilities (like Wargroove) may be a good way to push Advance Wars in a better spot.
Wifus/Husbando are a strong marketing tool.
rileyrulesu
It’s super annoying that they’re right. I always HATED that part of fire emblem games and that’s why I loved Advance Wars. There weren’t characters, you didn’t have to decide who has sex with who. It was just tactical gameplay and it was fun.
mideon2000
God damn, i don’t want a in depth relationship simulator in my strategy. Do it simple like the handheld fire emblems and let the auto develop bonds.
hoyboy2
Somebody should tell Nintendo that we aren’t all into hentai games.
MindSteve
The fourth one was anime af. They could definitely add a bunch of romance stuff. That said, please do not do that.
rogvc
Advance wars just looks so good though. Probably my favorite concept artwork ever.
XxJoexXZombiexX
Just give me all of the games on one cart w online play/ local wireless/ couch co op for a decent price and I’d rather have that while we wait for a new one.
DemiDivine
In a world where valkyria chronicles exists, you can still make good war games with some charm.
Nintendroid
I’m only appalled because all of the Fire Emblem content of the last 20 years has felt like cookie cutter meh at best, and absolute garbage at worst, while Advance Wars fans are begging for more content. Or so at least it seems to me.
grotscif
Anyone missing Advance Wars should check out Wargroove, it scratches a lot of the same itches, and clearly takes a lot of inspiration from Advance Wars while adding a few innovative twists, like the commanders having a presence on the battlefield with their own abilities.
OrangeStar222
Valkyria Chronicles fills that void. For AW I just want a light, breezy story that won’t take up much time. Just tell me why I need to beat up not-Russia and I’ll do it.
