After being denied time and time again after more than a year of Masters Days, Shauntal has finally gotten her grid, and is probably the grid I’ve been looking forward the most. While I’m more known as a Phoebe simp and a Phoebe stan in general, Shauntal’s actually one of my favorite Pokewaifus and my favorite Ghost Trainer in general, and it was well worth the wait; she easily acquired the best grid release of any normal pool 3/4* that isn’t Roark.
Here’s some reasons why Shauntal actually has a legitimate place in Ghost comps despite the oversaturation of the type:
1. Probably the biggest reason to use Shauntal over any other Ghost that isn’t SS Korrina is her gauge. Most offensive Ghost types are extremely gauge heavy and Shauntal is distinct in a variety of ways: she is one of two Ghost types that can actually buff her speed and quickly (the other being Agatha) and her long animations from her burn also help in a way that no other units can replicate. Moreover, running Numbing Blow Fall Allister means that she can replicable a 3 bar power with only a 2 bar move assuming you spec into Hex over Shadow Ball, further diversifying her Support pool and choices.
2. Complementing this, Shauntal has the fourth highest Ghost DPS in the game behind SS Korrina, Anniversary Lillie, and New Year’s Dawn; noting that Shauntal actually beats the lattermost lacking Power Posture if she gets into PR range, despite NY Dawn getting an extra increment from Renegade Cynthia’s Master Passive. Shauntal is also *the* most powerful DPS user amongst all 3/4* units, tying with Roark and with both losing only to Power Reserves Korrina running Champion Calem and Champion Hop. However, Shauntal being more independent of PR relative to these two provides a better blanket performance, while Shadow Ball drop increments (which are cheaper for her than someone like Fantina) can provide her with even more damage.
Speaking of PR, Shauntal so happens to be one of the best abusers of PR due to her burn slowly ticking her health down; with proper play, Shauntal can get up to three boosted Shadow Balls without a single form of healing. As a rule of thumb, make sure that your HP is an odd number and your health is green when you enter a battle with half health; if it’s not, you lose one extra hit worth of damage so tweak it accordingly. Ironically, too many special supports often have regen in their kit, and while I’d usually use SS Brendan for this, I’m torn between using my remaining candies to finish Anabel or use Bede for some of my other freeze projects down the line, so SS Kris can make do for a while (and essentially acts a Mini Fall Allister, which, god willing, comes out in a select seasonal banner come next week). The playstyle also really captures the thrill of finite time and output just as Shauntal’s stories narrate a climatic conclusion, especially when I’m doing minus 2 with 2.7k points. Shauntal will probably remain one of my favorite units alongside Lisia, GP, Lysandre, and Kahili/Wikstrom.
