Oof. Yeah the first one was a long game. Definitely have no time for this right now, finishing up Persona 5R, FE Engage and just started Hogwarts.

Yeah that’s a pass…

I will say, the secret boss in OPT1 was just a complete crap shoot. Side quests were convoluted, and the boss was stupid OP with some really dumb invulnerability mechanics. Also you cannot save before the fight, so you are forced to do a dumbass boss gauntlet before every attempt.
To make things worse, grinding up the last 4 characters would have taken 30 hours, because, like FFV, late game EXP just dries up. Nothing like FINALLY beating phase 1 of the secret boss, then a forced party swap for phase 2 has you staring down the barrel of a gun with 4 level 25 party members. Extremely poorly thought out post game.
From what I have seen in OPT2 demo, a lot of older mechanics are now fixed. The beast hunter doesn’t speak Unga Bunga, catching monsters is now a viable option (especially with low chance auto capture), night/day cycles changing skills makes each character stand out even more, and the limit break mechanic adds more variety to combat. Also the stories for each character (chapter 1 at least) are WAY better than OCT1 stories. (Except for Tressa’s “when confronted by sea pirates, she chose violence”, which always makes me laugh)
Only thing 2 will have trouble beating is the god tier OST from 1. I am very excited to beat to shit out of this game.

Noice, sounds good and beefy like the first game. With the way Octopath was broken into chunks, it was perfect for a game that I could play on and off for a really long time without getting lost/confused. Big, linear RPGs sometimes have trouble holding me because I put them down for awhile and never get back into them the same way.
RicebinBernacky
That would probably have excited me when I was younger, but now I just don’t really want to be playing one game for months
solarsaturn9
I used to enjoy long games but this is just too unrealistic these days. I find that often times games that are like this usually rely too much on grinding, making the player backtrack, or overly wordy dialogue. I’d love to see these kinds of games hover around 30-50 hours maximum.
averageduder
I enjoyed the first one but I’m hesitant. I’ll wait for reviews.
The late game stuff in the first one soured me on it. I don’t mind grinding a little and enjoy a challenge but it seemed excessive for the post game stuff.
Luke_IAmYourDaddy
You gonna spend half of the game grinding.
joseHidAl
I’m interested. I didn’t play the fisrt one, would that be a problem stroy wise? I’m open to spoilers forma the first one.
wicktus
I don’t like the idea of having that ‘final’ boss that requires you to grind and level up the hell out of your character and is too strong, not elden ring strong, *cheating OP want to throw away your switch* strong.
I like a game I can finish without spending 20 hours on a boss alone. I would have hoped that they would improve that point and make proper “final” chapter.
Octopath is inspired by live a live but clearly lacks that simple yet efficient storytelling and conclusion LaL had

im just too busy for that!gotta watch a short, gotta be on reddit instead!
jaybleeze
Will random encounters still take 20 minutes like in octopath 1?
FunkmasterP
Good god. No thank you!
BigSto
perfect.
Trunks252
Did they fix the side quest tracking? Or is it still useless?
HairyNippleCrust
Yeah, but do the stories actually intertwine?
DQ11
65 of 70 hours just you spamming same thing over and over again.
I need more from an rpg.
betteroff19
Can they just add an easy mode I don’t like grinding 😭😭😭
TechieTravis
I wish I had time for games of that length these days. I want like 15 to 20 RPGs that won’t take me a year to beat 🙂 Outer Worlds is a perfect example.

The first game wasn’t nearly good enough to justify this time commitment.
Unnie55
Can someone confirm that there is auto-dialogue for this one? That was a big con for me for the first game…
keylime39
I just can’t with these long games anymore
UnroastedPepper
Need to beat tactics ogre quickly…..
wickermoon
I honestly lost interest in the first one rather quickly, and the second one doesn’t look too different to me. :/
I guess I’ll keep waiting for Sea of Stars. That demo actually blew my mind.
QuinSanguine
Man, that’s the triple patty fatty right there, we eating good.
Tom_Bombadil_Ret
I should really play the first one..
littlecolt
Wow that is freaking long. Is there an actual story this time? Do the characters acknowledge one another this time?
ffgod_zito
the switch line up this spring is soooo good. Just picked up metroid prime, this is next, advance wars after that and then of course Zelda.
Stoibs
Bloody hell, that’ll probably translate to twice this amount for me. I remember reading the Persona 5 Royal estimates being about 100, yet my final savegame was >200hrs.. 😅
So glad I chose to get this on one of the portable platforms (Steam Deck in my case) so i can chip away at it during lunch hours and what not.. This is going to keep me occupied for months :O
garion333
DQVII sequel confirmed
lester_pe
man i love these games but i really hope they have some kind of end game loop 100hrs will just fly by in these kinds of games. altough most people will say 100hrs for a $60 game is enough.
edit: lol after reading the comments most people really want shorter games? grinding is literally part of rpg games it can be fun too
obsertaries
I’m like 75 hours into Xenoblade 3 and probably have two or three chapters left, and a dozen or two side quests. Once I finish, I will probably need to take a break from long ass JRPGs.
Thanalan_Wanderer
It is really hard to dedicate that much time to a game when there are a near endless amount of equally great or better games to play. I love JRPGs and adored the idea of Octopath Traveler..but nowadays I am finding myself looking for shorter more focused video game experiences. These massive RPGs were fun when I was a teen but nowadays I just can’t sit through long and mostly repetitive RPGs like these, especially turn based with random battles.
I dropped the first one 20 hours in because I was feeling fatigued with the gameplay loop and excessive amount of random battles, even thought I genuinely loved the game or at least the idea of it.
dragonsooped
Probably gonna just be garbage that drags on for way too long, like most JRPGs.
Thrashinuva
How much of it is wasteful dialogue?
Eryn85
Good one and will be worth my money like the first that got me 94 hours…and for those crying that don’t have the time then don’t play RPGs and go play live service games or 10 hours indies…not everyone has 60 dollars to throw around for an 20 hour AAA bugged trash or 60 dollars for 20 hour game with an 30 dollar 5 hour dlc then another 5 hour dlc for More 30…keep dreaming they will release “20 hours masterpiece rpgs” again….the era of shorter masterpiece rpgs is over
jonsbryhill
you know i don’t need a game to be 100 hours, but i’m not complaining either. perfect game to get sick of and to get back to after a few months
and i never finish games either so whatever lol
kaelliam
They say that like it’s a good thing, oof
Pinguino21v
I don’t have time for that! I already have three Switch games in my backlog!
First world problems!
thefunyunman
That’s… too long now, I’m 27, working 40-50 hours a week, girlfriend and planning for kids in 2 years
When I was younger and had more free time, I would enjoy 450+ hours in MHFU, now 70-100 hours is just too long (Pokémon legends is a exception, 127 hours to complete the Pokédex)
runfaster21
Okay, 70 hours. But first I need to play Live A Live, Tactics Ogre Reborn, Persona 5, Fire Emblem Engage, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. And before I play those, I need to finish Triangle Strategy.
nikoandtheblade
Bruh theirs only so much time a game can have with you mentally b4 it drives you insane trying to complete it with the sheer size of if. Especially when youve got only small moments 2 play cause of work and cant afford long cutscenes. I wish i could buy this but i cant :/
Tall_Mechanic8403
Uhh way to long
lat3ralus65
Yeah I ain’t playing all that
djmetalhawk
That time would be a lot less if they gave more XP per battle.
cura_milk
I’ve come to the conclusion I’ll just never finish my gaming list.
