You have to wait until it actually enters raids again. Since I did Groudon all day I was able to sit comfortably with energy left over. You can only get energy by walking after you primal revert it the first time.
TLDR: You have to wait
actually – at least that’s what I was told so – if you find somebody that has evolved one before and is willing to trade that one with you, you should be able to gain energy through walking.
hope that‘s correct, maybe anybody out there that can confirm this?
Make it your buddy and you will get 1 candy + 100 primal per 20km (or 10km with a poffin)

When I walk my groudon it gives me 100 primal energy. Is this because I’ve already evolved him before?

Sometimes mega energy is available from field research. I’ve never noticed primal energy, but maybe.
Perhaps if you make it with your buddy? I know most pokemon with megas earn energy while walking, but idk about the primals.
Need to wait until they are back in raids. I would guess they give them a short second outing this year, summer/autumn maybe, given they were only around for a short period
All the people in here are wrong if you set it as your buddy and walk with it there is a chance to get primal energy but only if you have mega’d it at least once which now that I look it seems you haven’t so I guess you’re fucked and they were right
This was the most grating part of the weekend. How little energy the primal raids gave you. You had to do 5/6 raids just to mega evolve it once.
If you primaled a different one you could walk it to get more energy.
If you put a primal as your buddy you obtain primal energy that way
20 km for 100 energy

Edit 20k will get you 100 primal energy and one candy
If you have it as your buddy and you earn a candy walking you also get 100 primal energy.
Before someone else suggests walking as your buddy, don’t. That’s not the right answer here.
Csmt farm energy unless mega’d it once.
Walking 20km gets you 100 energy. A good tip is to walk it 19km with a normal berry/berries then swap out buddies, swap them back in and use a poffin you’ll get the initial 100 and only need to walk another 1k for 100 more.
You can also save it for the next day to maximize hearts.
Make it your buddy and walk with it. You earn primal energy from doing that.
That sucks bub, I fed my groudon a poffin while walking and for every 10km I scored 100 energy, it’s really too bad you had to have evolved it first before you start gaining it
