This isn’t the first time this happened lol. There’s was a bee named after Charizard and there’s beetles named after the legendary birds.

Pokémon was literally inspired by bug catching so this is honestly perfect

If they found a new type of yellow corgi pls let it be Yamper

That cockroach looks scay as hell. Give it a lightsaber and a robe and it becomes a fucking Sith Lord.

  5. As someone living in Singapore, I’d bet a thousand dollars that you could find a new species of cockroach every single day if you kept digging in the rubbish chutes all day long over here…

    >Named after Pheromosa, a cockroach-like Pokemon that appears in the seventh generation of the video game series…

Since after 5 hours of this post being up, no one wanted to comment *what the actual name was*.

edit – The entire Latin name is `Nocticola pheromosa`.

    * Nocticola – which means fond of the night in Latin.

  7. uhM ACTUALLY it’s technically an Ultrabeast 🤓

    Meanwhile, at Game Freak…

Marketing Team: Fuck yes! We get to get people talking about our characters without us having to do anything.

Legal Team: Fuck no! Now it’s gonna be so much harder to enforce our trademark…

Aerodactyl and Bulbasaur both have extinct species named after them. The guy who named *Aerodactylus* proudly said he named it after the Pokemon, meanwhile the guy who named *Bulbasaurus* said it was a coincidence, and he named it after the bulbous lump on its snout and that its species name *phylloxyron*, which literally translates to “leaf razor” is also a coincidence. Sounds like he doesn’t want to admit to being a huge nerd (being a paleontologist, he kinda already outed himself as a huge nerd)

  10. That doesn’t look like no damn cockroache lol

*Nocticola pheromosa*, that is actually pretty cool name

    > was discovered through comparing differences between male genitalia of specimens

What kind of person do you have to be that that’s what you choose to do with your life? I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s honest and valuable work, but I wouldn’t personally ever have considered a career looking at bug dicks

As someone who has a roach phobia but loves Pokémon I am having very polarizing feelings over this information

    > Named after Pheromosa, a cockroach-like Pokemon that appears in the seventh generation of the video game series, the species was discovered through comparing differences between the male genitalia of specimens with its closest relative from Borneo, among other checks.

    > Entomologist Foo Maosheng, who co-authored the finding, said: “There are some similarities between Pheromosa and the delicate cockroach that we found, such as having a long antenna, wings that mimic a hood and long slender legs.

    > “Both my collaborator and I are Pokemon fans, so we thought, why not name it after a Pokemon inspired by a cockroach.”

    > The discovery of Nocticola pheromosa, published in the Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology on Feb 27, marks the first time a cockroach from the genus Nocticola – which means fond of the night in Latin – has been found here.

Isn’t there some disease named after sonic the hedgehog

  16. Scientists have named three species of beetle after the Legendary Bird Trio. And an enzyme after Pikachu. (There’s also an enzyme named after Sonic the Hedgehog.)

Oh, and there was also a time when a scientist tried to name a cancer-causing gene “Pokemon”, but The Pokémon Company threatened to sue.
