Miyamoto comes from a time, where games didnt need any story. And no one wanted any story. Well, ok, some general framing or motivation, like “you’re good, they’re bad, rescue your girlfriend”. But it used to be all about the gameplay when Miyamoto learned to creat games. And he never changed his way. And that’s fine. Not every game needs to have an epic and deep lore to be fun. Beating the mechanics can be motivation enough, if the mechanics are fun. That’s all.

People are **still** on that hill, huh. Yeah he’s a game dev that likes to focus on gameplay, what’s wrong with that? Not every game needs a heavy focus on story, and that’s completely fine. Minecraft has zero story and it’s the most played game on the planet. His strength is making fun gameplay, and as much as people like to criticize him Nintendo would be *nothing* without his revolutionary efforts.

Different devs feel differently about things in gaming what else is new?

Miyamoto is a relic from a different time. Some of his decisions make me think he’s out of his mind. Star Fox Zero alone should suggest his best ideas are long behind him.

And? It’s a perfectly legitimate approach for a game designer to want to focus on gameplay over story.

One thing is not caring about story in games, and another one is actively looking to butcher games that had the ambition to present an interesting story along with the gameplay. Things are not mutually exclusive.
The ending of Link’s Awakening, Rosalina’s backstory, the whole concept and weirdness of Majora’s Mask. They all existed because Koizomi sneaked them in, defying Miyamoto’s orders.
What do we get when when those orders get literally followed? Sticker Star, Super Mario Galaxy 2 (The gameplay is great but the whole story and hub feel stripped of any charm), Star Fox repeating the same story everytime Miyamoto is in charge.

So much of the discourse around Miyamoto comes from misinformation, mistranslations, out of context quotes, and outright lies and personal vendettas.
Miyamoto is not above criticism, and like any artist he has made bad decisions. Does not take away from all the good he has given.
The reason why we like the Mario games is because they are so simple. Simple stories, with blank slate one-dimensional characters. That’s a good thing (at least for the mainline games). It means that spin-offs and and the fandom at large can meld them into whatever they desire.
Whatever restrictions were implanted onto the Paper Mario series, it’s still a game made by Intelligent Systems. They’re more to blame than Miyamoto, who has been very hands off since Sticker Star (which Miyamoto found boring btw lol).

It feels like people are taking the vid at face value without actually watching it, Arlo isn’t claiming that Miyamoto hates story in games because he focused (rightfully so) on gameplay first, he is claiming that Miyamoto hates story in games based on multiple cases where he intentionally tries to remove any semblance of story/flavour text from games with little reason.

Of course it’s this dumb f*ck. Arlo, by his own logic, hates gameplay. He said that Fire Emblem Engage had the best gameplay in the series, but he wasn’t going to finish it because he didn’t like the story. He goes too far in the opposite direction and most of his opinions are trash

And because of him, Paper Mario is ruined forever.
