This for sure isn’t the type of game I’d expect to see hard performance drops in, but I guess anything’s possible in the Unity engine.

key takeaways for people that don’t have 10 minutes to watch a video:
– opening cinematic “creates an expectation for the reboot’s visuals in gameplay which, alas, just doesn’t match up” (i.e. reviewer prefers the cel-shaded art in the opening to the in-game models)
– resolution: 1080p docked, 720p handheld
– built in Unity
– framerate is capped to 30 fps and runs with uneven framepacing in the birds-eye view; battle cutaways are unlocked 60fps but is more often a 30 to 50 fps
– “So, the outlook isn’t great on the surface. But honestly, to be really frank here, not once did I really mind. Never did this uneven frame pacing get in the way of my actual enjoyment of Advance Wars gameplay … all things considered, the frame rate graph here says one thing but the naked eye test says another”
– reviewer definitely prefers the look of the original over the remake, but acknowledges that 3D models allow for zooming your view of the map in and out, which he considers a big QoL improvement
– “The Advance Wars 1+2 reboot is still an easy one to recommend … the gameplay loop of the original remains intact and I ended up pushing all these technical points aside in the end”
I wish they would have just released it on GBA online. This is probably the last Nintendo game that needs a rerelease, I replayed it a couple of years ago and it still holds up great.

I’m a little surprised that WayForward, with their pedigree and an enormous delay in release, put out a game with wonky frame rates. But I’m not at all surprised that it’s still a great game.

“superb gameplay but visuals disappoint” isn’t this just most Switch games at this point
also this describes Pokemon Legends Arceus to a *tee*

Well, I think the 3D looks fine but the fact that a game like this isn’t running at 60 FPS is pretty hilarious, considering how little ever happens on the screen.
It’s literally a few units on each side on static 3D backgrounds.

Having never played a game from the Wars series before, is this something worth buying or is it all based on nostalgia? It appears to be a turn based strategy game that does have a big following. But if I’m looking at say Mario + Rabids Sparks of Hope for $30 vs Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp for $60, what does Advance Wars have that is missing from Mario + Rabbids and is that worth paying double the price?
And it’s probably worth mentioning I think at one point Sparks of Hope included the first Mario + Rabbids game as well for that ~$30 price tag, before the point about Advance Wars is *two* games.

Honestly this is one of the most underrated games IMO

I just really hope we’re still getting the original on gba online

Why didn’t they just make 2.5? New maps, new mechs ?
Seems like so much effort for a reboot when the formulae is so easily updated.

Oh no, this turn based strategy game is dropping frames

Excited to play it, but shame about the artstyle.
So many games developed with Unity have this “mobile game”-y feel that really ruins the experience to me.

Better than the other way around tbh

Who’s playing advance wars for visuals?
Just glad the game is finally being released
