Yeah I thought some criticisms were pretty valid. I enjoyed the movie, but I hope their aim is to make a better sequel, not a bigger sequel, which seems to be illumination’s thing.

I mean maybe he does. I would take anything this man says about video games and chisel it into stone, but I’m not sure about movies.

The thing is Miyamoto knows what people like in a mario game. I would think a lot of that translates well into a movie. People would want what they see in the game in the movie. This might not match what a movie buff wants to see in a movie.
Lol I honestly doubt that. This just seems to be the new cool thing to say after a source of entertainment takes any type of heat. All the adults that grew up in the 80’s and 90’s have money now and the long time fans would be there regardless. It’s the ip I don’t think it really mattered who voiced the characters.

Seeing as he’s gone on the record saying that he did expect it to be successful (although he did say that this level of success was lucky) I can’t help but wonder if a sequel is already in production and they just haven’t announced it yet. I mean, Sonic 2 came out just a couple years after the first Sonic movie after the first one was delayed in order to fix Sonic’s design.

Saw the movie last night, and while I enjoyed it immensely, I can see why critics gave it a hard time. The movie is a love letter to long time fans of the series, way too much lore for the avg person that hasn’t played much Mario over the years.

Would have been so much better if they used a real voice actor for Mario’s voice. It always sucks when they go for star power (pun intended) over quality.

Good. It wasn’t supposed to be Citizen Kane. Those useless critics fail to understand that all I want is lots of references and flashing, colorful lights. The movie could literally not have been better, it got my six year old shut his stupid fucking mouth for the whole movie. I hope Miyamoto-san seppukus those critics that wrote bad reviews.

It’s a pretty brainless dumb movie… but it’s also harmless and doesn’t aspire to be much more than that.
Well outside the Peaches song… and the youtube video for that is better anyway.

The movie is successful because it is decent and a good market fit at the moment. From a critical standpoint, the reviews are not wrong. It’s a fun movie but the writing is lacking. The second act was boring because it skimped on character development and it was just them going on a fetch quest.

Honestly, my kids loved the movie and it was exactly what in needed to be. People aren’t going to a Mario movie for the plot.

Critic reviews really weren’t even that bad. Seems like people are just used to game reviews, where the mean score given out is a 7/10. Movie reviews actually use the whole scale.

It was a great movie. Most of the criticisms I’ve seen have just been nitpicking seemingly for the sake of nitpicking. Now, I wouldn’t expect a perfect score from critics but I’d expect it to be like ~7/10 with critics because it focuses more on the fun aspect of movies and not so much the deep storytelling aspect. Much like Mario games.

Would I ever have watched the movie when it got to streaming services on the tv?
Probably not by myself, but I will probably spend more money for my kid to watch it again at home because she loved it.
It killed in the box office because of parents bringing their kids probably way more than gamer fans checking it out.
