This is a blast from the past as I remember having the original game on my NES.

Funny, I just watched the “What Happened?” video on the Double Dragon franchise, which in part lamented there not being a good game in the franchise for a while…

So it’s nice to see it making yet another comeback — hopefully this entry will be a return to form? We’re having something of a second golden age for beat-em-ups right now I feel like, so it’d be nice to see the OG beat-em-up franchise bring something new to the mix.

    Looking good!

I played most (if not all released in the west) games, but it was some time ago – can somebody give me a hint, where/when Uncle Matin debuted?

  4. ruffdaddysmooth

Don’t like them trying to River City the game

  5. wangston1

Hopefully it’s a game with some depth like SoR4 and Fight N Rage. Other games like Shredders Revenge, Scott Pilgrim, Castle Crashers, and River City girls are all really fun multiplayer experiences, but the depth isn’t there for many hours of single player play. Those are all great fun games, but SoR4 and Fight N Rage really pack a punch.

It would be nice if they added TONS of moves like Double Dragon Advance. That game has almost one different move for each button combination + Dpad.

And I really hope they avoid something like the TMNT SR special bar – that thing broke the game imho, people just spam taunt + special online.

I loved playing DD3 back in the…early 90s. Recently got back into beat em ups with the Turtles. Definitely gonna check this out

eh I am getting more of a river city ransom vibe from this game and not a Double Dragon vibe and there last new game was in 2017 why are they making a big deal about them returning when they haven’t been gone that long and they also had that collection

  9. Weary_Guidance_5260

Shame they made it just a 2 player local coop but I’ll still take it 🙂

Im gonna get down soots but I do not like these sprites at all. Big step down from RCG or even Scott Pilgrim.

  11. We need the 2009 Zeebo port too, not the iOS version.

  12. StudBoi69

Between this, SOR4, TMNT, and this, beat-em-up fans are feasting!

  13. why did they go with such an awful and lazy character design? The people who wanted a game in this franchise are 30+…not children

This looks pretty cool. In my opinion Double Dragon has been hit or miss over the years, and has found it hard to differentiate itself from the competition. the tag mechanic in this is very unique, borrowing from tag fighting games (the two genres in very connected historically).

My one nit-pick is that I’m a bit disappointed that they didn’t go with the powerful bruiser architype for Marian like how she is in the River City Girls games. I get that this is a different developer (Secret base and not WayForward) and that there is no proper canon or continuity for the this universe of games. But I liked that design for Marian and since they’ve introduced a new character with Uncle Martin, they could have just made him the ranged weapon user architype instead.

This looks extremely fun, I’m all for some new DD, but why the Cartoon Network aesthetic instead of something closer to the spritework in Double Dragon on SNES?

Meh, I’ll buy it anyways because it looks like a good time.

  16. It has “Dragon” in the title twice because it is a Double Dragon game.

  17. DonTeca35

Double dragons reached their peak when they had a crossover game with the battletoads. Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team. Still my favorite game to this day apart from Super Mario Bros. 3. I think even the art style holds up better than this monstrosity

  18. EDDIE_BR0CK

Not loving the aesthetic / graphic design choices here. I’m more likely to go play the new TMNT or Streets of Rage, personally.

  19. ShinobiGotARawDeal

How many retro beat em ups do we need to see before Nintendo demolishes the genre with a Mario beat em up?

  20. sodalimefizz

I was never a big Double Dragon fan but this practically looks like a new IP in the style of River City Girls but with some Double Dragon references thrown in. Trying not to be a hater but that’s just my first impression. If it’s good fun then I suppose it doesn’t really matter.

  21. OscarExplosion

Considering what happens to Marian in Double Dragon 1 and 2 it was a good idea to give her a gun.

  22. Answerofduty

Hopefully it has a robust juggle combo system. That, along with decent art, is all I need in a beat ’em up.

  23. Z0idberg_MD

From my memories of childhood: “get me a dagger and I will fuck shit up”

  24. microbefox

Sequel – Double Dragon: Rise of the Double Dragons

  25. Quiubolequeque

Perfect chance to bring Abobo’s big adventure to the switch, man, that game deserves so much recognition.

  26. TotalBismuth

Was all great until the title screen announcer at the end 😬

  27. FridayCicero702

Totally diggin’ this new resurgence of the beat ’em up genre.

Can’t wait until we see SOF5 as well because SO4 totally blew away my expectations. Seeing Dotemu literally reference strategy guides/fighting moves guides from the ’90s automatically tells me these guys know that the sauce truly is the boss.

I hope Comix Zone 2 is on the horizon. I’ll also take a new Crime Fighters entry and toss in some B. Rap Boys while we’re at it.

  28. ChippersNDippers

This looks good, so much about a beat em up is having hits that feel *solid*. This game really seems to have captured that feeling perfectly, from what I can tell.

  29. Froyuken

Thank you Matt McMuscles for willing this game into existence with your Double Dragon marathon video! 🙏🏽

  30. SnooCrickets6733

A new beat em up from Secret Base! I loved their last beat em up Streets of Red

  31. renoits06

super double dragon had the best soundtrack.

  32. imacomputer64

Where the hell have Bimmy and Jimmy been the whole time?

  33. All these beat em ups are beginning to look kinda samey to me. TMNT, River City Girls, and now this all kind of look alike with the squished characters. I guess devs automatically think of NES games when they set out to do “retro 2d”, but there were so many varied styles during the 2D era.

  34. moriobros

Don’t like the look of the game. Seems like advanced wars/Funko beat em up.

  35. pablomentabo

I love how the solution to kidnapping prevention is for Marion to just get a gun.

  36. Palangana83

I’m loving this beat-em-up rennaisance we’ve been having over the last few years! Maybe someday I’ll get a new Golden Axe game!

  37. VexatiousBoner

If you can’t Eiffel Tower a bitch in this game then I ain’t buying
