It’s a me, Money-o
There’s a Mario movie? Huh.
**Nice.*
(☞ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)☞
The real question here is whether it can outgross Incredibles 2 or not. Frozen 1 is highly likely if it does. Frozen 2 is out of reach, I think.
Updates every $100m more, hah.
Hollywood: Wait…A video game movie _can_ make this much money without deviating from the source material and not having fart or poop jokes?
we really gunna get a new post every 100m?
Does this include Japan?
Here’s to hoping it outperforms Incredibles 2, the two Frozen movies, and The Lion King 2019, a.k.a. very high-grossing animated movies that were released prior to the pandemic.
I loved the mario movie, but if video adaptation become the next big thing in Hollywood, I can finally consider Hollywood devoid of any creative thought.
This only did so well because Nintendo was very hands on with the movie. By Nintendo I mean Miyamoto. Last of Us was also very good because Neil was very hands on with the show. We will see how well Last of Us season 2 does.
But back to the point: I don’t think any other mascot games will do well. Remember Ratchet and Clank the movie? That one didn’t do to well. Now it may be because it’s not well known, but do you think Spyro or Crash can do these numbers?
Hell there is a Twisted Metal show coming out on Peacock, hopefully that does well to get some eyes. But again, I don’t really hear that David Jaffe is working on the TV show. So it’s really a guess.
I don’t know why people think other game movies have so much potential.
There literally aren’t many game franchises with a legacy spanning decades, an immense fanbase with broad appeal, and that’s still alive and relevant.
Y’all act like Earthbound can reach these numbers. 🙄 Maybe Minecraft lol.
First movie ever to make over 1 marbillion dollars.
Remember, being accurate to the source material and having a few clever references doesn’t mean the movie was good. Even if it felt like a “love letter” to the games and had great animation, the movie is objectively pretty sloppy in its storytelling and writing, which are major factors in a cinematic adaptation.
I’m kind of concerned that the success of this movie will set a bad precedent for video game adaptations going forward. Most people didn’t care that the plot was messy, that despite the heaps of style there was little substance, or that it more so felt almost entirely like a really long advertisement than anything else. That, and it planted a bunch of seeds for potential sequels and spin-offs, which I don’t particularly mind, but it’s a symptom of the larger Hollywood problem of cinematic universes, where setting up further installments is more important than fleshing out the world or characters. I feel like it could possibly reinforce the overall lack in effort or quality most adaptations suffer from. Studio execs see references and being pleasant aesthetically equals money, and that audiences could care less if a movie is well written or expands upon what made the property good in a significant way that justifies a theatrical adaptation.
Don’t take it from me though, I’m just one of those freaks who think that they can do better than this
