Counterpoint: Nintendo’s online infrastructure has always been 10 years behind its competition. If they had the network engineers of their competitors, it WOULD be smooth and relatively seamless.

Sakurai can be brilliant and a dumbass for this take at the same time, he can occupy both spaces.

>”I don’t think online play and Smash Bros. are a very good fit for each other,” Sakurai said. “One of the best parts of Smash Bros. is how players can become champions among their friends. But being subjected to online competition can cause people to lose confidence, which isn’t great.”

I hope people actually read the article or watch Sakurai’s video, because this post’s title is misleading and intentionally inflammatory. He said this in discussing Brawl’s development and 40 secs after he says this he goes on to say
“it doesn’t matter what I personally think. If my job is to do it, I’ll do it. And you never know, it could be fun in its own way. In fact, when we got online play working, I remember thinking, Wow it’s actually possible.”

What a garbage take

I get the point of being isolated while playing online with random people leading to losing confidence. There are many times that I just go online in games and just aren’t playing that well and feel too bad to play some more.
It’s interesting that he noted how smash needs synchronous communication but now with rollback netcode that fixes a lot of the issues with that kind of communication, this shouldn’t be as big of an issue compared to back in the Wii days. If there’s another smash game, it better try to use rollback.

I think everyone should go watch the video before making comments based on a clickbait headline.
Edit: To elaborate, both here and in other places I’ve seen people jump to the conclusion that the online features are neglected because Sakurai doesn’t like it. He specifically says in the video that if it’s required of him, he’ll do it, and his opinion does not change that. He’s not intentionally making online worse just because he prefers in-person play.
He *personally* believes that Smash is better in-person compared to online. That’s not influencing his work – every Smash game since Brawl has had online, and it’s not his fault Nintendo’s online infrastructure isn’t up to par with that of other companies.

I’ve always preferred Smash (as well as other fighting games) in-person. The banter just makes it more fun for me. When I got to that age where I can no longer just hang out at a friend’s house, I switched to online and it always just felt like playing against a CPU.

Online play on the Wii, yeah I can see some latency issues coming up with how things were in the mid 2000’s, and if it’s something you’re being pressured into doing by higher ups it always feels a bit worse, at least that’s my interpretation.

I thought I was hot stuff at Mario Kart. I hopped online ONE TIME. Everyone was constantly boosting, and I got dead last.
Never again.

I don’t really find Smash online anymore fun than smash against cpus. All of Smash’s fun comes from screaming at the friend who got the hammer. Nintendo games just have the vibe for playing on the same couch.

Smash bris was leggy as hell online when I got it. I wish Online was better with Nintendo. I don’t even have online anymore. Atleast they have some single player bangers worth having
