Why do I have XL candy left after using it all to power up?



So I just spent 15 XL candy to power up my Gyarados, but I have 3 XL candy left over. How is that possible?

    OK, so I think I’ve answered this myself and looks like it’s because of the buddy boost. The pokemon is level 44, which means it did require 12 candy to level up from 43.5. However, with the buddy boost it was level 44.5 which requires 15 candy to level up. So it looks like it shows the amount for the buddy boosted level but actually takes the amount for the real level.

    I’ve sort of confirmed this by swapping out for a different buddy and the stardust requirement had gone from 13k to 12k.
