(This post was removed once but I received permission from the mods this time. To those who commented on the first post, sorry).

For those asking “What is Hong Kong 97?”: This was an unlicensed game developed for the Super Famicom (Super Nintendo in Japan) by an amateur and was so unprofessional that they only sold it as data on floppy disks. In order to play it, you needed an illegal accessory, probably most of which were made in China, that could dump data from cartridges onto floppy disks and play games from the disk alone. The game was literally made simply to be inflammatory: it uses pictures of real people without their consent, foul language and has a digitized picture of a real dead body, which no one is really sure on the origin of. No one is sure how many copies the person made of it but none had ever been seen before, at least not on the internet. I don’t have one of these disk drives so I can’t play the game but I’m 99% sure that this is indeed an original.

AVGN did an episode about this game and I honestly think watching that video is the best (and most entertaining) way to understand what the game is all about. I also posted a video showing it off up close, including the back of the image card which has never been seen on the internet before. You can find it on youtube by searching ‘ultra healthy video game nerd’.

*WARNING* In the video I say “don’t ask where I got it” just to build some mystery. This statement has really pissed some people off badly. I’m not really withholding any earth-shattering information that would add to or take away from the likelihood of the game being real. Skepticism is perfectly natural for something like this, but let’s avoid name-calling please.

Do you live in Hong Kong, by any chance?

  4. CriminalMacabre

It would be a valuable collectible… If it wasn’t a complete piece of crap

This was cross posted to creepy gamin a while back if I recall

So, when I saw the picture, I was like, “Oh man, that game looks so shitty.” But then, somehow, after watching the footage of the gameplay, I was still shocked at how shitty the game actually is! Wow! That song though!

Nice find! I doubt it was the only one, because most people would make a backup should the original one be lost, but should it be legitimate it’s likely it’s one of very few left in existence.

“wipe out all 1.2 billion of the red communists!”

  9. _bojangles

How can you confirm it’s real if there’s no other copies out there?

I’m a bot, *bleep*, *bloop*. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:

  13. canterellare

Oh God no. I thought I left this in my past. Why is this here? The music… OH THE TERROR!!!

Is it okay to have this image be contributed to the Wikipedia?

  15. About7fish

Pardon my skepticism, but how can this be verified as legitimate?

  16. SicilianEggplant

Disclaimer: this may not mean anything! I was bored and did some half-assed research out of skepticism.

Can anyone else find that 3.5” floppy brand online? Specifically “Mitsubishi Kasei Datalife”? “Mf2HD” wasn’t brand specific.

Some back story: HK97 was made in 1995. In 1990 Mitsubishi Kasei (who was in the in the floppy business amongst other things before then) acquired Verbatim (international manufacturer for decades and number one in the industry in the 80s). In 1994, when Mitsubishi merged into Mitsubishi Chemical, their media arm was under Mitsubishi Kagaku Media which “created media *mostly* under the Verbatim name”.

Earlier in Verbatim’s independent history they had a massive recall and ultimately created the “Datalife” branding that had a better warranty than other manufacturers at the time.

So while Mitsubishi Kasei would have owned Verbatim and thus the “Datalife” line, I can’t find anything showing that “Datalife” floppies were labeled under anything other than “Verbatim Datalife” as opposed to “Mitsubishi Kasei Datalife” as the image shows. I did find a couple pictures of “Mitsubishi” and “Mitsubishi Chemical” labeled floppies, but again nothing with the specific combination in the OP’s picture. Furthermore no indication of “Mitsubishi Kasei” branded floppies.

Obviously they could have been branded differently for recognition where they were based in Japan, but again Verbatim was an international name before that as far as floppy disks go.

(There are Kodak Verbatim Datalife floppies as they owned them for some years before Mitsubishi Kasei acquired Verbatim)

I’ve got that stupid 5 second song loop in my head now.

  18. Trouterspayce

I’m pretty sure I have the device somewhere that plays the disks on a SNES. My friends Dad used to make regular business trips to Hong Kong, and would return home with bootleg games, etc.

  19. [deleted]

    No….That’s not true!! **THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE!!!**

  20. Cool, it’s starring the great action star of the 70s Bruce Li. Known for his roles in Re-enter the Dragon and Enter Another Dragon.

Just so everyone is aware, this guy is posting this to every imaginable subreddit but he has yet to provide anything verifying his claim. He’s admitted that he hasn’t even checked the contents of the disk and that he has no way to prove this is a legitimate copy.

This is something anybody could have made with a floppy disk and a printer.

It would be one thing if he were saying that it COULD be real but instead he’s saying it definitely is and boasting about it wherever he can in order to farm that sweet sweet karma and promote his knockoff AVGN YouTube channel.

  22. ArcOfRuin

PSA: THIS USER HAS BEEN COMMENTING THIS ON ALL RELATED SUBREDDITS PROVIDING NO PROOF AND SHAMELESSLY SELF PROMOTING HIS YOUTUBE CHANNEL. IT IS ENTIRELY POSSIBLE HE IS KARMA FARMING OR DRAWING ATTENTION TK HIS SHITTY CHANNEL. TAKE WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.

    Dear, Shimasterc

I know you must be getting a lot of pm’s about this illusive game you have. I know that this message may be lost within a sea of other messages. But I would like to put aside everything about this game being fake and the criticism section you are getting and say something very important. As corny as it may sound, this game ranks among legend. People have searched EVERYWHERE for this game and all have amounted to nothing. But yet you suddenly come out on the internet and claim that you have found this “Artifact” that hasn’t never been seen before. So It’s no wonder that people are in disbelief about you.

However I would like to hear this out. I want you to show the whole world proof and prove them wrong. I believe in you. But I also come with a warning.

If this somehow turns out to be a hoax…you should turn back now. Because it will be too late to turn back later.

    Good Luck
