Why aren’t more people talking about this? The “lost” Secret of Mana sequel on the SNES that was never released outside Japan has finally gotten an official translation, AND it’s getting a remake next year! I feel like this should be a bigger deal.

I was super excited until I saw the price tag. I could see $5 a game then an extra $5 since one was never released in the US. I would already own it for $20-$25, but I have a lot of other games on my To Buy list so I can’t justify that price.
I’m hyped! I never played the fan translation but I’m super excited now that we are getting a remake! I decided to replay Secret of Mana again cause it’s one of my all time favorite games!
1. SD3 is a niche title since the only people that played it were the ones to got the fan translation and played it on an emulator
2. It’s been so long since then that people kind of gave up on it being localized and only old heads remember the franchise at all.
3. The Secret of Mana remake was so bad people are skeptical about the Trials of Mana one, even though it looks pretty great from the Treehouse footage. Biggest letdown is that there’s no co-op like in the original.

It was hard finding people that even recognized Duran or the music or the tree in the trailer reactions. Then they heard “Mana” and thought it was a whole new game. Only after seeing Collection of Mana did some put 2 and 2 together.
I don’t think the gamers these days are old enough to remember this series so they don’t know wtf it is, to talk about it. I’m excited af about it.
It IS a bigger deal. At least for me. The fact that SD3 is finally getting an official release is something I would have never thought of for years now.
I mean, I certainly am. But BotW2 and Dexgate, and Banjo in Smash to a slightly lesser extent, kinda overshadow everything else. Especially given that this is a Nintendo subreddit.
A lot of people were saying that anyone interested in it has already played the fan translation, which rings a little hollow. The same was mostly true for Final Fantasy III when it finally got a western localization but it got a lot more fanfare from game press.
I think Square’s neglect of the of the Mana franchise and the poor quality of later DS Mana titles has kind of burried the franchise somewhat.
Lots of youtubers I follow have been like “I dont know much about it” which I think speaks volumes to how well Square has tended to the franchise in the intervening years.
Which is a SHAME.
People ought to be flipping out.
The price tag honestly. $40 is too much for the collection, at 20-25 I would have probably bought it already.
Seiken Densetsu 3 is a really fun game. I really enjoyed playing it. It has a lot replay value, since you have multiple characters to choose from, multiple stories to playthrough, and the characters have different classes. There are three final bosses, so which final boss (Dragon Lord, the Dark Prince, and the Masked Mage) and story arc you go through depends on who selected as a main character Angela/Duran, Riesz/Hawkeye, or Charlotte/Kevin.
I think people didn’t notice it much. There are new games announced and covered at E3 like Breath of the Wild sequel and Pokemon Shield/Sword got a lot of the coverage from the media. Plus you have a lot of the other game developers announcing their big AAA titles, so bigger franchises are going to get more coverage. I think more Square-Enix fans would be excited to see more about FF VII Remake than Trials of Mana.
It is really difficult to get excited about a game that is over 20 years old. Plus Square-Enix hasn’t release a new Mana game in a number of years. I am definitely happy that Square-Enix is bring Trials of Mana over to the States. I will definitely be getting a physical copy of the Collection of Mana when it comes out later this year. Personally, I think it would have been better if they called it Secret of Mana 2, since that is what is has been called by the US audience.
Trust me, it there was some sort of controversy about the game it’ll get people talking
Preordered the physical version on Amazon today, can’t wait 😊
I only screamed of joy twice during E3, SD3 remake reveal and BOTW2, I’m so hyped for this, once I go back home I’m playing the collection with my brother, hope the remake retains the multiplayer and adds a third player option
I went straight to the eshop to find out it costs $60 in Australia so I decided not to buy it. They are all great games but I’ll wait until it’s on sale.
As someone that actually played SD3 around fan patch release I was not only super pumped at the news, but I also bought the collection asap and dumped hours into SD3.
Also worth noting USA is getting Romancing SaGa 3 as well and I am so friggin excited. Already bought RS2 on Android, PS4, and Switch, lol.
This is the reason I finally gave in an bought the Switch.
I can’t stop SCREAMING about this! This is such an awesome move from Square Enix I can’t believe it! To give it such a faithful remake is phenomenal.
Now if only they could give Final Fantasy 6 this same treatment….
All of r/SecretofMana are talking about it.
If Square can get off their asses, maybe Nintendo could too and get us a Mother collection..
I feel like secret of mana in itself is sort of niche. The people who haven’t played it don’t even realize how big a deal it is. And the fans who do love it may have already played the rom hack translation or silently are enjoying it now.

This was the best thing at E3 for me. I’ve been waiting on SD3 to release in the West since I first played the ROM nearly 20 years ago.
Its a huge deal for us Mana diehards, but this series has been practically dormant since the PS2 when Dawn of Mana killed it, aside from handheld and mobile spin-offs. Anyone under 26 wasn’t even born yet when Secret of Mana came out, and most older people have moved on. Of all the friends I used to play Secret of Mana with, I’m the only one who still maintains an active interest in gaming. Mana is a niche cult classic these days.
I have literally waited decades and never played the fan translation. What small hope I had was rekindled when this collection was announced in Japan. Then the 3D remake of SoM came out and it felt like it bombed a bit so I thought we wouldn’t see it.
I’d say “I can’t wait to play it “ but I’ve preordered the physical edition which comes out in August. I’ve waited this long, what is another month or so?
I heard it’s like the Mother 3 of Mana games.
I have evangelized about this game the moment I screamed, “Oh my god! This is my favorite game!” during the Direct.
It’s an amazing game for 1995 and holds up today. Tons of replay value, beautiful art, toe tapping music, and engaging characters and stories.
It’s a phenomenal that Square is even acknowledging Mana since the last game was 2007. Between this and the FF7 remake, which I was originally uninterested but has piqued my interest, it feels like Square is acknowledging their early history and long time fans.
Seriously, such a good series at its heart, so beautiful, and really under loved.
Secret of Evermore WHEN?!?!?
(I know it’s not a Mana game, I don’t care. I want it on a system I have plugged in)
I was extremely excited about this release when I saw it on the Direct, but the price of the bundle seems to have killed the hype for a lot of people. Alongside the much larger Castlevania Collection and Contra Collections releasing at $20 USD, the Mana trilogy is somehow priced at $40 for a Game Boy game and two SNES games.
Let’s see soul blazer illusion of Gaia and terrinigma in the next collection
If this succeeds we might get mother 3
and yet golden sun is still neglected :/
All people that are excited (myself included) are too busy playing it already as the official translation was released just after the direct. 😁
Because people would rather complain about Cloud saves and the National Dex and the price of games
For the record, I bought it because of this post, so there’s that.
it is a bigger deal, most media are just not cultured enough to know a gem when they see it here. i was **jumping** when i heard the soundtrack and saw the tree, before the sword even appeared on the screen. this remake is a good step overall for the series, but still some parts look poorly planned/half assed.

example, this is a remake in the same way OoT got the bad 3DS remake, simply adding high res game textures together with higher poly character models, and a couple flashy effects possible with today’s tech. i wanted a remake in the same way FF7 has a remake or the Tomb Raider has the reboot.
you tear down the old plans, noting the essence and purpose those things were there for in the first place, and build a fresh new plan using modern tech capabilities to fulfill those old plans, rather than build a new building with the same old plans with new paint. **there is no reason Jad should look the same as it did with the top isometric view but now with shoulder camera.** Jad was that small and simple because of technological limitations from the 90s, the age before 3D, before higher memory, storage, RAM and whatnot. the same you can say for the pausing to use magic, when it was easier to code the spells to start in the pause menu rather than have the action continue in the background in slow motion while you are in the spell menu. the same for other game’s turn based combat, when it was again easier to code the game to handle combat one action at a time rather than have 2 platoons fighting in the background, or any Tab targetting combat when it was easier back then to decide everything with a code of formula rather than build a system of hitboxes and timing . all those things happened because game developers wanted to simulate combat with limited and weak chips and machines.

in 2019 those 1995 answers to problems should not be applicable with modern tech.
