An OCD Man’s Guide to Screen Protectors

I have a very unique curse in that I am absolutely horrible at applying screen protectors and yet extremely OCD. I would opt to leave my switch unprotected if I didn’t have to hear the screech of my switch rubbing against the dock every time I play in handheld. I tried 3 different brands of screen protectors and failed with each of them at least once. Here is my opinion on each of them.

I should note that I live in a very dusty environment. My house is off of a dirt road and a dirt driveway, so dust commonly comes in. I used the shower method of running a hot shower to let the steam lift the dust.

The first one I tried was [from Spigen.](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09FP26WHX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) This one had so much promise. It is by far the easiest to apply and to apply correctly. It came with an alcohol swab, microfiber cloth, and tape to remove dust, and all of them were big. This is important because it’s very easy to get fingerprints on the screen when cleaning with small wipes, which completely screws up the process. The applicator is so cool. It’ll ensure that the protector is centered and it was very easy to get the air bubbles out, which it didn’t have much of. The issue I had with both provided screens is that [they each had this clouded contamination on them](https://imgur.com/a/E3v4Odg). It wasn’t a fingerprint or dust that got trapped. This screwed up the whole thing. Had they worked, like most amazon users have said they do, then this would have been the perfect option.

The next one was the [amFilm brand.](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09B1L53CB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) It is the cheapest option coming in at just under $10. Right off the bat if you’re good at applying screen protectors or aren’t very nitpicky about how they come out, then this is the option for you. All these screen protectors are pretty much the same, what separates them is the application process. However, the quality is pretty bad. It comes with wet clothes, dry clothes, a microfiber cloth, and some sticky tape to get the dust off. The issue is that they’re all tiny. Multiple times my fat fingers touched the screen when using the wipes. The tape is so tiny that it is very easy to get your fingerprints on the screen when using it. And the worst part is the microfiber cloth. It’s abysmal. It leaves more debris from lint that you take off. This all makes the process very hard. The application is the wing method. The issue I had, besides applying it only to find that dust was under, was that there wasn’t a guide to place it correctly. Two times I applied it only to find out a corner was lifted off the screen. This one was very frustrating. So frustrating that I jammed it in the garbage and cut myself.

Finally I bought a [dBrand protector.](https://dbrand.com/shop/glass/nintendo-switch-tempered-glass-screen-protectors) It was the most expensive coming in at $25 including shipping. It came with a very wet alcohol patch, a microfiber cloth, and a sticky thing. The microfiber cloth was BY FAR the best. Almost no lint was left when using it. The application process is a bit wonky. You apply it via the wing method but tape the bottom to the switch to properly align it. All this did was make me accidentally touch the back of the screen. The first time I failed it, but the second time came out absolutely perfect.

To conclude, this sucked. The dBrand kit provided the best opportunity to get the screen spotless before application. It also has a nice switch box which is cool. The Spigen seems like a great option. I might have been an outlier. If the screen works as intended, it’s the easiest way to apply it out of these three options. The amFilm is pretty bad. It’s BYOM: bring your own microfiber. However, if you’re good at applying tempered screens then this is a great option.

Hopefully you get something out of that and don’t end up spending $50 on screen protectors as I did. Happy protecting.
