31.4GB for a 1GB PS1 game and two PS2 games that were like 3-4 GB each on the day? Even the PC versions aren’t much bigger than that. And that’s not even including the Bonus features which are another 30 GB.
What are they doing with these games to multiply the size by so much? Please correct me if I’m reading this wrong.
Absolutely no way these games need to be this big space-wise. The physical edition for the BioShock Collection required an additional 30+ GB download as well, but that was for 3 games coming from the 360/PS3 generation + all their respective DLCs.
There’s just no way these games are that large outside of Konami just not giving a shit about compression.
Yeah no thanks. And I’ve been waiting on this collection for a while.
I was thinking of buying this but forget thdt. So stupid
So I need to go buy another SD card to even play these….why lol
[Music intensifies] What’s wrong? No free space? NO FREE SPAAAAACE??
I’m curious, is the extra 30GB install required to fully experience the game or not. Since if you do the math that is over 60GB, which is definitely double the standard Switch storage and overrall I own a 64GB so it would take up my entire card file. I have a few game collections on my Switch like Bioshock and Portal, and they do all the games separate do I wonder. They did the Mega Man games (minus Z/ZX Collection) in 2 parts (and really part of me doesn’t understand why they did that for all the platforms).
For 1 set they did MM1-6 on 1 (which were the NES games) and 7-10 on the other. And I remember with that collection they actually were sold only as the NES games first and that was only on 3DS and XboxOne/PS4/Steam with a gold amiibo and a few years later they did LC2 on all platforms listed above minus 3DS but did both collections on Switch in a bundle. Then the X Collection they were in a single set and evenly split (with Part 1 being 1-4, and Part 2 being 5-8. Apparently the first half is the better half). And so on.
Yeah no. I was looking forward to getting these, but this is just a big NO
I have to imagine that this is a sign of a low effort port. Over 60gb for a PS1 game and two PS2 games is insane, even with the extra content.
Lame. Pass by me.
brain rot konami at it again
I am very much a physical purchaser when it comes to the switch so this has killed off the enthusiasm I had for purchasing this collection when it was announced. A shame but if I have to basically download the game, I might aswell wait until I have an appropriate laptop.
Didnt the Witcher 3 have everything on cart? Am I mistaken? They make cards big enough, Konami.
So, Switch physical is pointless and there’s no PS4 version, damn.
Crazy. The Witcher 3 is 32 GB. No way these games combined is that big.
Thank god I got that 400gb card instead of 256 lmao
This is not quite correct. It depends on region. US region has 2.4GB on card, and a 24GB download (+30GB videos). EU seems to be 2.4GB on card and 29GB download (+30GB videos).
who cares? SD cards are so cheap.. get a 2 TB card and forget about it
No deal. The reason to buy physical is for longevity. Having to download things defeats the major reason to buy physical.
A reminder that the entirety of Tears of the Kingdom fits on 16.3GB..
Oh… Might just get for PC then
Welp, I guess that kills my hopes of owning it physically
Love these games, bought and played them all multiple times (initial releases plus HD collection), and I was absolutely looking forward to picking up a physical copy for my Switch. Not going to happen anymore. I’ll wait a year or two and get it on Steam for $20 instead so I don’t have to dig out my old consoles to play them. Bummer, because I would have loved to have them on Switch.
Well, guess I’m not buying that
I’ll get it for my shelf anyway but disappointment is an understatement. Hopefully the Japanese or Asian-English versions have more on the cart such as with FFX/X-2. I’m willing to import like I did with that collection.
EDIT – Apparently the imported versions are the same. This sucks, maybe this’ll just be a digital purchase from me then.
I’d love to get this but I don’t want to re upgrade my sd card when I just did so a month ago lol
So what’s the move here then, should I just buy it digitally and put it on its own giant SD?
I don’t get the point of this
Why would anyone buy this physical copy if nearly everything is digital anyway?
Is it resellable, at least? (As in data downloads as DLC for a physical copy, rather than one use redeemable eshop keys)
So when nintendo switch online shuts down the physical copy will be worthless. Got it
That’s fucking unprofessional
Stop physical production collection just keep separate trilogy games in cartridges it’s worthless if you are forced to download missing contents while using physical copy pure BS
I liked the idea of these games but making it mostly download versus mostly on a cartridge kind of stinks.
I bought the 1TB memory card for my Nintendo Switch.
Bring it on.
Metal Gear Solid 1 is probably 1 GB.
Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 presumably have upscaled cutscenes so I can easily say that both of them can account for 8 GB each, if we’re being generous.
The Digital Graphic Novels taking 30 GB because they’re upscaled is where I come to that conclusion about upscaled cutscenes for the others. These were less than 8 GB a piece on the PSP and are now doubled.
I can see how it makes sense but its a bummer to have to download content on to the Switch. I’ll end up getting these on Steam and playing on my Steam Deck instead.
So I think there’s a typo in the OP, because I’m seeing that the physical version requires an extra 24.1GB download, not 34.1GB download.
This is still high, because the website gives a breakdown of how much space each game takes:
Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake: 1.4GB
Metal Gear Solid: 3.4GB
Metal Gear Solid 2: 8.0GB
Metal Gear Solid 3: 12.2GB
The original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 were MSX games, couldn’t be more than a couple of megabytes each. Metal Gear Solid (including the VR missions) came on 3 CD ROMs, so that’s around 2GB? MGS2 and 3 were each originally DVD games but these are the HD versions so their file sizes seem a bit more reasonable.
Each one of these figures also includes a “Digital Screenplay Book” (which appears to be a transcript of all of the dialogue in the game) and a “Digital Master Book” (which appears to be some sort of strategy guide). So I’m wondering if these two digital books for each title are taking a gig or so between them. Seems excessive, but it’s hard to say for sure.
Glad I ordered a 1TB micro SD this week
Soo you cannot play this game on a base switch?
(Without getting a sd card i mean)
If a physical copy does not contain a fully-functioning version of the game (not talking about patches and content updates), then it’s not a physical copy. It’s just a physical license key.
As an almost-exclusive physical copy purchaser, I’m gonna abstain from this one and play the games on my PS1/PS2/NES… with physical copies.
For perspective, most games today require a day-1 download just to be in a playable state. The cart still acts as a hardware DRM, so more flexible than a non-transferrable pure digital version.
This is shitty, but 100 times better than a download code.
Yeah it’s unfortunate that Konami didn’t wanna pony up for the bigger cartridge. If I do pick up this game, I’ll be on PS5 where it should all be on disc, no downloads required.
Literally no reason to buy this physically then
Honestly at this point, why even release a physical version? If only, like, 2GB out of 55-60GB is on the cartridge, its mostly pointless to have the physical cartridge.
I also feel like that “30 GB of bonus videos” is kind of mostly pointless. The videos are just… graphic novel adaptations of the MGS1 and MGS2 games. Which… the original games are already in the collection. And why have them has gigantic video files? If they’re books, shouldn’t they be some sort of readable digital book instead? It would probably take up vastly less space if it was.
Also, while the entire collection including 30gb videos wouldn’t fit on a single Switch cartridge, the entire collection EXCLUDING the videos would. Konami just wanted to cheap out with the smallest cartridge they could manage, at our expense.
