People are protesting
As far as I understand, reddit wants to make changes that kill 3rd party apps and give more money directly to Reddit. Moderators protested, as many of them use 3rd party apps to make moderating more manageable and efficient. This would make their jobs more difficult and take longer, which would be problematic, as they are already unpaid volunteers. As such, many subreddits were closed/privated in protest, most for just a day, but others kept on for a while. Reddit, rather than acknowledging the issue and working on a solution or compromise, instead decided to insult and belittle the moderators, and insinuate that they are like nobility abusing their power. Reddit basically told mods to open their subreddits or they would be removed and replaced. They have done so, but are protesting in different ways, usually decided by poll because the reddit ceo called them ‘undemocratic.’ There have also been statements that some mods have been shadow banned, which reddit ceo explicitly stated would not occur.
Basically, reddit is implementing changes that make moderating more difficult and kills 3rd party apps, because it gives reddit more money. Mods(and other 3rd party users) aren’t happy about this, and so they are doing what they can to protest against it by changing how their subreddits operate. Some subreddits even changed without moderator input, and the mods just rolled with it.
Sure, we may not like that our subreddits aren’t the way we like them, I understand that. But thinking about it from the mods perspective… They are doing a lot of work without pay, and have just been told that work will be made more difficult so someone else gets more money. Then, when they say try to protest the changes, they are directly insulted, threatened, and punished in ways they were told would not be used… It’s no wonder their response is righteous indignation. Reddits handling of this situation has been abysmal. Regardless of whether you agree with the mods actions, try to recognize the reasoning behind them. While we may not always like or agree with the mods, we should recognize that these are the people who keep our subreddits operational, and they are unpaid volunteers, that alone deserves respect. Even though I don’t agree with the changes that are made to some subreddits(cough, nsfw, cough) I understand where they are coming from. If only reddit would listen.

It‘s a form of „malicious compliance“ (a form of protest) as a reaction to reddit threatening to remove those mods who still protest. It targets reddit‘s pockets by making the sub less attractive to advertisers.
