So, basically, a year ago, he made a statement he wanted to make a Mario RPG 2 as his final game, but looked like he wasn’t in the industry anymore and making music.
Looked at his twitter account and turns out, he’s not working on the remake of the original one and was as suprised as everyone about the annoucement, yet very happy about it and looks forward the release!
Edit: They surely couldn’t know he would be interested in a sequel when making the remake, since he retired after Alphadreams bankrupcy, and made his statement when the game was in surely well advanced development state and peeps under DNA. Dunno if there is other ancient Alphadreams members on it yet, but we at least know the composer did return!
I am not involved in the remake.
But I am very surprised and pleased with the news!— chihiro fujioka (@ChihiroFujioka) June 22, 2023

In order to get a “sequel”, Super Mario RPG is going to have to sell a great many copies to a great many people and not just to its overly vocal fanbase.
anyone else immediately think the person died when a headline starts like that
Wasn’t Paper Mario straight up called “Super Mario RPG 2” during development
I have no doubt Mario RPG it’s going to meet Nintendo sales expectations easly. We know for sure that games like Astral Chain and Bayonetta were seen as successful with just 1 million sales which pretty sure those two games had bigger budgets than this Mario RPG remake. I can see it selling around 3 million copies at my lowest expectations.
I just hope they are planning something new with the franchise and that this remake is a bridge to attract new players.
Super Mario RPG was the only RPG in the Mario universe that connected with me. It had the right blend of… well, everything. It never felt like any of the other RPGs in the Mario universe got that mix “correct” for me. I never dug Paper Mario, and while the first Mario & Luigi game was okay, I couldn’t get into any of the other ones. It would’ve been cool to see a second Super Mario RPG get made with the same director at the helm.
I feel this remake of Super Mario RPG will be the difference between feeling vindicated that the game you played nearly 25 years ago was one of the best of all time…
….or another hyped-up treasure that was “great” because of the lack of access to it + low attention of its release.
To use a sports metaphor, it’s like watching a “classic” matchup from 25 years ago and just thinking about how either it lived up to its moniker or how slow, plodding, or weird the players/game was.
Off topic but thank you so much for cropping a pic of the Twitter post, I don’t have an account so usually don’t see em
Mario and Luigi series was the real successor to the original few paper Marios. Everyone was all upset when the switch paper Mario came out and it was butt, but Mario and Luigi was the hot girl that just needed to take off her glasses and let her hair down so we could realize how hot she was the whole time.
the mario and luigi RPG games are all top notch. i would LOVE for him to come back and make another.
A sequel would be an absolute dream made for me
Is Square involved?
All I know is it’s an instant buy from me.
