A new monster-collection RPG is coming out from Square Enix, “Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince”, and it looks incredible so far. Are you planning on trying it? Each previous entry to the series has been phenomenal in my opinion and I was curious how the most popular franchises’ fans feel about it. I feel like it has massive potential going by my experience with the franchise. After watching the trailers I’m super excited; it’ll be a breath of fresh air for monster-collection RPG fans.
You play as Psaro in his childhood, one of the antagonists from Dragon Quest 4. This game is actually a prequel to that game. You’ll see exactly how he becomes “Psaro the Manslayer, Master of Monsters” that the heroes feared. Pretty cool that we actually play as the antagonist for once!

Some new features will include:
– seasons changing which makes different monsters appear at different times of the year
– streamlined breeding/monster fusion so that it’s much faster and easier
– a vast and fully explorable overworld
– over 500 beautifully animated monsters
– full voice acting for the entire game
– Storyline with a serious, dark tone; you play as the Demon King’s son who has been cursed and banished, and now you must raise an army of Monsters to aid you

I’m pretty much done with Pokemon for the foreseeable future so I am definitely looking for a replacement. But it sounds like we have to have previous experience with the series for this?
I played a DQM game on my DS a long time ago. They provide a very interesting challenge and I love the differences it has from Pokémon
OG Dragon Warrior Monsters was waaaaaaaaaay better than Scarlet/Violet so yes.

I enjoy playing most monster capture games but I don’t think I’d be willing to pay full price for this one. If it goes on sale, I’d pick it up.
I played a ton of DWM2 when I was a kid, I always liked it more than Pokemon gameplay-wise. The breeding system in particular was great.
This was one of the most hype announcements from the Direct for me, day 1 buy.
I liked DQM Joker 1 & 2. Will definitely try this one come december

I like Pokemon but tbh more because of the IP and not because of the gameplay of the games.

I put 60 hours into DQ11 a couple years ago. And quite honestly, it’s one of my favorite RPGS. Everything from the charming characters, the intriguing story, and the art style just captivated me. As for this game, I might check it out. It looks interesting
I have been a DQ Monsters fan since GBC. Of course I’m buying it.
Pokémon’s severe nosebleed made me try Digimon CS, Monster Hunter Stories and Shin Megami Tensei though. They have all been very good (And better than anything post-Gen 5).
This is my most hyped game this year and it’s been forever since Joker 2. I’ll forever be sad about Joker 3 not leaving Japan so I was absolutely shocked that we got a new DQM. I’ve played every game that’s that’s localized and can’t wait, this is a day 1 purchase without question.

I’d like to give it a shot. I’ve said it before with other monster capturing games, each one I play is causing an itch that I can’t explain. Most of the ones I play are high quality and have a lot of effort put in them but they just barely miss the mark for what I want in a game like this.
Monster Hunter Stories 2 captured me forever, it’s so good.
I will buy dragon quest everything for the switch. It’s one of the greatest game series out there.
I’m gonna play this not because I play Pokémon, but simply because I love Akira Toryama’s style. I’ve only played DQ11 but want to play the other games eventually.
Absolutely!!! There is room on my shelf for more than one monster collecting/battling series. If this one is like the original, it will be a great addition to the Switch’s impressive library.

Fucking love this series. The game boy games were perfect imo. The DS game was fine enough so very excited to see all the improvements
I was a big fan of the first and second Dragon Quest Monsters on the Gameboy. I liked it more than Pokemon even. I loved finding monsters and finding combinations. This was the early days of the internet so you couldn’t really just go online and get spoiled from seeing every combination easily.
I bought the Joker games, but I unfortunately didn’t get into them. I’m not really a big fan of the move to 3D. For a lot of games I feel like 2D has charm.
I’m looking forward to this one though. I’ll definitely get it as long as reviews don’t unanimously say it’s bad or buggy. I’m hoping very much that it will be a solid entry into the series. If I do get it I am also going to try to play it with as little spoilers as possible.

Which of the existing Dragon Quest Monsters games would you recommend the most? I recall playing one of the GB ones way back in my early teens, but I don’t know which one it was.
As someone who never played the non-joker entries, I vastly prefer the protagonists be OCs. Tbh with you it’s the sole reason I didn’t play Treasures.

I played Dragon Warrior Monsters for Gameboy, so yes!
I know this is splitting hairs, but Dragon Warrior Monsters always had more SMT in it than it did Pokémon in terms of the monster mechanics and ~~fusion~~ breeding.
So as an SMT fan and GB/C DWM fan, I’m excited. I’m still lissed the DWM2 remakes never got localised.

I’d love it if lots of people bought dragon quest monsters the dark prince, but as usual square enix is horribly handling marketing in English speaking countries. I seriously do not comprehend why they consistently set up dragon quest for failure with their poorly handled marketing.
So, if you like Mon RPGs? Go for it. It plays differently from pokemon, and has a bunch of fun mechanics that most people who only have really touched pokemon aren’t used to or aware of.
Possibly hot take, but out of the monster collecting games I’ve played Pokémon is my least favorite, and it’s not particularly close. I’ve never been a big fan of the franchise

Dragon Warrior Monsters is what got me into the monster collection genre. I’ve been a hardcore Pokémon fan for decades, but I’d be more in Square’s pocket if they’d invest more in this side of the DQ franchise.
I played the original DQM GBC games after playing Pokemon for years. I absolutely will be getting this game. It’s a different experience than Pokemon. In some ways, even with the child antics and pun names, it is more mature. Super hyped to see it get a new installment (especially after DQ Treasures).
