They’re like 10 hr games. Just buy both

Sonic has a dedicated enough fan base that he sells fairly consistently. He won’t come close to Mario’s numbers, but I imagine this game will be successful in its own right.
That said, if I were Sega I would strongly reconsider having a Sonic game come out so close to Mario and Spider-Man

It will definitely sell well enough, but I do think launching days before Mario wonder will cause it to be pretty overshadowed at first. A November launch will still allow it to be available for the holidays, and probably also help it gain more attention during its launch week.

This is the first sonic game I have considered buying in a while and no way am I getting it before Wonder.

Is it still 1991?
witwebolte41
Sonic never competed with Mario. That’s like my over weight self trying to compete with Olympic sprinters.
sulfater
Yes they will compete during the next Olympics in various sporting events as is tradition
AtsignAmpersat
Compete how? Like exist at the same time? Yes. Sell comparable numbers? No.

They’re not “competing”. A person that wants to buy Mario will buy Mario. A person that wants to buy Sonic will buy Sonic. I will be buying both. It’s not a “one or the other” situation.
Brandeaux7
When’s the last time Sonic was a threat to Mario?
DarkAres02
I like Sonic and have no interest in Mario, but Mario will sell way better. And that’s fine
Jemainegy
Sonic does not really want to compete with Mario so much as co-exist. Sonic knows that on the Nintendo market won’t compete and as far as general consensus will be less popularly received than Mario, but also knows it has a dedicated fan base and and has found you life of quality since generations but more recently with mania. Sonic team does not intend to take Mario players but to take advantage of the boost to the 2d market provided by Nintendo in its space but more importantly across other platforms in which they have very little to compete with by way of brand awareness.

I just don’t understand the obsession with “competing” that gamers have. Especially these days, they don’t really do “mascot wars” anymore. If you are a fan of a genre, wouldn’t you want both to succeed? It’s not like one is a threat to the other in any way.

I’ll buy it on sale – I bought Sonic Frontiers day 1 and it went on sale a couple weeks later so I’ll pass. Mario on the other hand… I’m just more excited to play.
Shujinco2
I’m buying both. I’ve been dying for a properly good 2D Sonic since Mania, and 2D Mario since NSMB Wii (which is when i got bored of that type of Mario). I’m all over both games for sure.
And I feel like there’s a large amount of people that are similar. It may be hard to justify buying both financially, and I bet more people are going to buy Mario if they have to choose, but I think Superstars will do fine.
kukumarten03
There is no competition at all.
ForgottenForce
Mario and Sonic scratch different itches so yea
CMDR_omnicognate
I don’t think they really need to compete any more, they both have their own fan bases, though mario had arguably a much wider appeal now. I’m sure sonic superstars will sell fine
throwawaytempest25
Can two legends co-exist?
WoxyBoxy
It will do just fine. Sonic Forces released a week after Mario Odyssey, and anyone’s thoughts on the game aside, it sold very well.
Hopeful-Ad8761
I wish they just make a proper Mario + Sonic game with a proper campaign and everything…
deecro3000
Why are we still comparing them like it’s 1993?
They’re running in separate lanes but can coexist, free yourself from the deadest branch of the console wars
LtDkAngel
Considering that the most search character on rule34 is Sonic I’m sure it can!
Schellhammer
At this point, i don’t even see them as competition to each other.
MegaKBang
Mario and sonic arent competitors, they are partners
LoveSikDog
I don’t get the competition stuff. I will end up buying both.. Most people will end up buying both.. Mario will sell more, no doubt.. But that hardly means that Sonic will sell bad.. So, I don’t get it?
echoess84
I don’t think the upcoming Sonic game could compete with Wonder since Mario’s games have a higher quality than the other platforms.
But I think the new 2D Sonic game could be a good game
ManiacalTeddy
After releasing Sonic Frontiers, what, the day before God of War Ragnarok came out? I think Sega likes to live dangerously.
descender2k
Who cares?!
B-Bog
The two haven’t been nearly on the same level in terms of quality and sales numbers for decades now lol, wtf kinda question is this
lostpretzels
I’ll be honest, I don’t even know if Superstars will be able to compete with Mania.
