Also Elden Ring only released a year before ToTK, that’s not enough time to influence the game. Especially when the game was done by then except for polishing

  2. Tolkien-Minority

Zelda didn’t copy Elden Ring because Zelda is the apex

  3. t-bonkers

Obviously, especially as the game was pretty much done when Elden Ring released and the last year was spent on polish.

I do hope they play Elden Ring now though, and FromSoft play TotK and they both influence each other for their next games to make for even better experiences the next time around. Both games, ER and TotK are probably in my all time Top 10, if not Top 5, but they both could still learn a thing or two from each other.

Is this Elden Ring is going to be the new is this just Breath of the Wild?

  5. HusseinRing

The journalist asking this question really thought that Aonuma sat down and played the entirety of Elden Ring and came to his team and said you know what let’s redo the entire game we have been making for 4 years now and finish it in a year

  6. LoveSikDog

I’m sorry, but what is even similar enough about them to justify a stupid question like this? They both walk places? They both feature green grass? What the fuck is this?

  7. drunkentenshiNL

TotK was pretty much done when Elden Ring came out, it was just held back a year for basically physics testing and polishing. Not exactly a whole lot of time to revamp a game in any major way.

Anyone who thinks TotK copied Elden Ring can say that Elden Ring copied BotW, or that BotW copied Skyrim, or that Skyrim copied OoT, or whatever. It’s silly.

  8. mightynifty_2

What an incredibly stupid, clickbaity article. Of course TotK didn’t copy Elden Ring. They didn’t even have enough time post-release to do so. Beyond that, do you really expect anyone to believe none of the developers played Elden Ring in their free time? And even if we lived in some fantasy world where they did copy Elden Ring, *who gives a shit?* Seriously, why is anyone upvoting this garbage?

  9. Some of the comments on there are even worse. It’s like they live in a world where Breath of the Wild doesn’t exist.

  10. Its2EZBaby

What a stupid waste of time article lmao. Slow news day I guess

  11. UnofficialMipha

I don’t even think the BotW devs played other open world games except for the people from the Monolith Soft team that came to help. And you’re trying to tell me that they played a game that came out months before we know for a fact TotK was mostly done?

  12. TH3PhilipJFry

This is all a distraction to try to make you forget that they copied BotW to make TotK, those poor developers got their game ripped off and no one has noticed!

  13. *Copy* elden ring?

**Bitch they got their own goddamn blueprint in botw.**

  14. Ned1982K

Both incredible games. I do like how it turned out they both ended up having concepts of vast underground ruins together with bits of civilisations falling from the skies. Not sure how one copied the other or vice versa thou. These would have been planned well in advance. Just great minds think alike.

    >He then spoke about the 3D jumping system in A Link Between Worlds, that made it look as though Link was “coming right at you”.
    >
    >”When I showed this to former Nintendo president [Satoru] Iwata, he said he ‘didn’t know this was possible’,” Aonuma recalled. “I was very happy to hear that, because to me that’s the essence of game development: figuring out things no one else has thought of.”

Anyone got any idea what they’re talking about?

  16. Harthacnut

They prototyped BOTW using the first NES Zelda game. Adding in mechanics and then turning it into 3D. Bosh. Job done.

  17. We all know TotK didn’t copy Elden Ring for one very good reason. *It actually copied Genshin I-*

  18. down-with-homework

How about there not being an Elden Ring without BotW?

  19. Langis360

Yeah, and the DBFZ devs totally didn’t copy Marvel vs. Capcom either. /s

BotW had things in it no other Zelda game did, but that many a Western open world RPG featured, like crafting. When people say BotW had no Western influence, they’re being delusional at best and dishonest at worst. Yes, Nintendo can interate on other devs’ ideas too, even Western ones.

As for TotK, I have no doubt that other games, Western and Japanese, influenced development. The vehicle controls in TotK are very similar to the gold standard of console vehicle controls outside of a racing game: Halo. Could be a great-minds-think-alike thing, but Halo had more than just a modest fanbase in Japan. Just one probable influence.

  20. SRIrwinkill

yeah that’s because they were copying any of the other 10 souls-like games you silly dinguses.

  21. Mysterions

And even if it did, it’s cool because Elden Ring borrows heavily from Zelda anyway.

  22. Yolteotl-Ben

Well they should have checked on the mount / horse system from Elden Ring. It deserved an update from BOTW outdated horse mechanics and path finder. FF16 and Elden Ring mount game design is similar and enjoyable / usable…

  23. masterz13

I stopped playing Elden Ring like an hour or two in. It’s not fun dying every 5 minutes; at that point it just becomes work, not a game.

  24. Riomegon

They were too busy ripping off Genshin Impact to rip off Elden Ring. /s

  25. Hahn1995

I thought the creator of Elden Ring straight up said he was inspired by BOTW.

  26. bonecollector5

I wonder what the last 1-2 work years of a totk dev looked like. When the leadership says “that game that came out more then a year before ours? Nobody played it cause we had no time, to busy working” Japanese people are build different man…

  27. James-Avatar

The only similarity to me was the Spirit Ashes/Sage’s Avatars but I don’t think they outright copied it.

  28. damp-dude

I think anyone thinking how unrealistic it sounds to partially or completely redo a game in light of either new technology, new gameplay design, better story, should look at the messy history of Doom 2016! Not to say totk should have done it, just that it’s been done . Well maybe they should have done it a little 😛

  29. MangledLoMein

It’s a cute article. Hopefully one day the writer writes something not silly BS.

  30. victoryforZIM

Zelda didn’t copy a game that it’s not even similar to? Wow, I’m shocked.

  31. CharlotteNoire

Isn’t this basically the exact same article from some years ago saying Zelda copied dark souls? You know that time where from software was like “to be fair everyone copied Zelda at some point” or something?

  32. ExpertAnything5074

Elden Ring copied and was a direct result of BOTW being massive. Without BOTW, you would have never gotten Elden Ring. Elden Ring has to be one of the most boring games I’ve played.

  33. Gomez-16

I can see how people could think that. Everything in the game 1 shots you. I think I have like 9 hearts and its brutal.

  34. TippsAttack

LOL. you people care way too much about this stuff.

  35. LDragon2000

Just like how Skyward Sword didn’t copy Dark Souls in 2011 but they both have very similar level designs. Maybe the argument could be made for Demon Souls since that came out in 2009.

  36. TheGamerKitty1

People acting like open world games never existed before.

  37. Wait people actually say this?

I don’t remember Elden Ring having the fuse and ultrahand mechanics. What do they even have in common, beyond being open world games with a medieval setting?

  38. CelestiaIChimera

i feel like this should be obvious to anyone who played the game, or even just looked at the trailers. two very different games

  39. DarkVenusaur

6 years to copy paste 90% of the previous game’s map and mechanics?? Sure.

  40. Why would anyone want it to be a copy of something anyway

  41. LegatoSkyheart

That’s a real silly claim to say when Elden Ring is likely more inspired by Breath of the Wild then Tears of the Kingdom to be inspired by Elden Ring.
