Some interesting news came out of the court case that highlights Nintendo’s current success.
Nintendo’s publishing revenue is over 3 billion higher than Playstation and Xbox. Publishing revenue means what they earn from the first-party games they publish as well as monetization of said games.
Nintendo – 5.18 billion
Sony – 2.1 billion
Xbox – 1.3 billion

But nintendoom 🤭
Nintendo’s worst performing first party title, is PlayStation record breaking smash hit.
By far bigger than even both of them put together.
What do you expect from the company that owns like half of the most recognizable characters in video games?
It just goes to show how important first party stuff is compared to buying shit out from other companies.
and Nintendo costs are probably lower too
50+ million units sold for a wiiU port of Mario Kart
Imagine now for a switch 2, a Mario Kart 9 with an actively maintained multiplayer service and new technical and gameplay innovations
With just one game they have a system seller, that’s Nintendo’s firepower, one zelda, one good mario game and it’s selling by trucks
The price never/rarely drops for Nintendo first party titles.

I sold my Xbox and will probably do the same with my PlayStation soon as well. Nintendo is eternal
It’s why Nintendo doesn’t give two fucks about a “console war” they’re doing great.

The difference in numbers between the best-selling Switch games and the best-selling PS4 games is massive. The Switch numbers are better updated, but when you consider the fact that Nintendo games have cheaper development costs and stay fully priced then it makes sense that they make way more money.
This is rather obvious just by nature or Nintendo… no? Nintendo *relies* on first party titles. Few people are choosing the Switch over PS5/XBOX in order to play any 3rd party game. It’s been well known for a long while that you buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games. You either like Mario/Zelda/etc and want a Nintendo console, or you don’t.
Because of this, first party sales would naturally be huge like this. Because of the % of install base being having to be higher just by nature of what is being discussed.
It’d be more interesting to see the tota software sales though. I would be pretty surprised if Nintendo came close to either of the other two for third party titles.
What first parties?
Ever since the new gen started, Sony and, specially, Microsoft have barely been releasing first parties.
Which says something, considering how often Nintendo sits on theirs.
It’s crazy. The entire court case FTC was trying to argue Nintendo wasn’t in the same market and thus they stupidly consider Microsoft 2nd rather than 3rd
In addition to all the other things being pointed out by other comments:
The heads of Nintendo have a significantly smaller paycheck than heads of other big video game companies.
this doesn’t seem like a surprise at all. Mario and Pokemon are absolute beasts.
That seems obvious, considering Nintendo is the most first party focused console creator. Like, that’s the main reason you buy a Nintendo console despite them being basically 10 year old potatoes.
In other news, water is wet and the sky is blue
It’s like Nintendo figured out the secret, that if you make a really high-quality product, that has universal appeal, that is just plain fun, and has very few if any bugs, then it’s like people want to play that and pay for it for years to come.
Nintendo has always been the king of exclusives, despite what others say.
Well no shit, pretty much everything Nintendo makes is first party
Considering Nintendo owns iconic faces such as Mario, Pikachu, Link, and Isabelle, this checks out.
Even their less iconic faces such as Shulk, Marth, Olimar, and Bayonetta are all housed within Super Smash Bros which is the best-selling fighting game of all time and has led new people towards their respective games.
Makes sense. Their games almost never go on sale
Ok.
Duh?
“Why don’t Nintendo games ever go on sale?” I submit to you this data point. It’s cause they make money at full price.
This is been the norm for decades
PlayStation has no game
No wonder Sony and MS don’t want them to buy anyone.
Wouldn’t it also include 2nd party games like Bayonetta 3? Nintendo published it.
I think Pokémon alone is like half of this.
That’s why it’s laughable to me how they were trying to act like Nintendo isn’t competition. Yes they are competing in a unique way but it’s wildly successful and lucrative and shouldn’t be discounted to fit the narrative Sony wanted to put out there about a monopoly. Nintendo found a niche within the same market.
Now let’s see third-party data lol
yooo this is crazy apparently people buy games that are fun???? who would have thought, clearly what people want is some recycled piece of shit battle royale filled with microtransactions that is identical to the other 40 piece of shit battle royales on the market
well obvious they never drop their prices, and everyone eats up their rereleases.
Well Nintendo is the only one with first party content to buy so it stands to reason they’d make the most
Makes sense, Nintendo sells much more first party software than Sony and MS
Nintendo is the smallest of the three companies by far:
Nintendo – 60 Billion (market cap)
Sony – 113 Billion
Microsoft – 2,500 Billion
Activision/Blizzard – 69 Billion
This case not really about who is better at making valuable first party games. It hinges on the fact that Microsoft has enough money from other sources to subsidize incredibly low prices (on game pass and eventually cloud gaming) and Sony will be unable to compete because they have to make a profit to stay afloat. After Sony is pushed out of the space (of cloud gaming and 3rd party distribution) Microsoft will raise prices because they have total market control and everything will suck, it’s classic monopoly behavior.
well that’s to be expected, Nintendo releases many more first party games.
If you look at the ratio of quantity of first party games released to revenue, Sony’s is probably the best
But what about call of duty 36? Will it allow me to shoot terrorist from region x in the head (with unreal engine 5 ray traced blood!), imbibe American military propaganda and/or allow white teenagers to call me gay and hump my face in a live 128 player multiplayer battle royal?
This is what happens when everyone young and old can enjoy Mario but not God of War.
wasnt spiderman the biggest game on the ps4? might wanna wait for that.
Man, anything they have to come up with to make them look like “the little guy” so the deal goes though. I hate this deal SO much.
More proof that Nintendo makes more money off video games than Sony and Microsoft. It’s actually more combined! It’s funny how 8 years ago, people thought Nintendo should quit the hardware business and go 3rd party a la Sega. Who’s laughing now? 😆
