I see people in the comments talking about how the switch is closing in on surpassing the PS2 in total sales. While yes that is true on paper, even if the Switch surpasses the PS2, it would not be as a significant of an achievement as the PS2 because the numbers are relative to the times of release
Few reasons being:
* The global population has grown by 2 billion since the PS2 released(2000) to today, 1 billion since the PS2 was discontinued(2012)
* The video game industry has grown by roughly 160% since the year 2000(PS2 released), and roughly 60% since the year 2012(PS2 discontinued)
So in conclusion, the fact that the PS2 has yet to be beaten in sales, despite the fact that there is 2 billion more people on the planet since its release, and that there is 160% more gamers in the world since its release tells me its the obvious king
If the PS2 was released today, adjusting for number of gamers today, it would have sold 248 million units

Switch base model’s price hasn’t even gone down since it launched in 2017. A $50 price cut for the holiday could very possibly ensure the Switch is the best selling console
Of the holiday 2023 season. That’s wild. Especially if new hardware from Nintendo is potentially so close around the horizon in rumored 2024.

Nintendo has done a good job in maintaining the Switch’s relevance throughout its entire lifespan, not just the early years. I still remember how the Wii U was basically left for dead back in 2016, with its dying gasp being BoTW, which was also released on the Switch at the same time.

It’s honestly super impressive that the Switch is this popular. Especially when you consider the fact that you’ve got phones that have more processing power than the switch and a playstation that can do ray tracing.
It goes to show that the games matter much more to users.

Doing some basic math here. If Switch sells another 2 million in Japan for H2 for a total of 4 million by March 2024 and Japan is roughly 25% of their hardware shipments, we get to 16 million units sold.
Noting that Japan is usualy below 25% of hardware shipments but i am using 25% toi account for weakness in other territories. Either way their 15 million fiscal year target is doable, likely low ball even.

Hmm, but Phil Spencer says exclusives don’t sell consoles! A system much older than the PS5 outsold it in Japan, all because of TotK. I think Phil has to re-think his strategies.

This is why I doubt we will see a Switch 2 anytime soon. The fact that people are still buying this console in huge numbers means there isn’t a pressing need to move on to new hardware.
Nintendo is its own ecosystem and doesn’t need to compete directly with Playstation or X-Box, although it obviously behooves them to not act like they don’t exist either.
Nintendo is also doing a great job catering to its market base, we all joke about the “cozy farm sim” heavy directs but there is clearly a market for that even if it cannibalizes itself a bit.
TotK also made it readily apparent that you don’t need 4K-60fps to make an amazing game. Sure that stuff DOES improve an experience but while I don’t speak for anyone other than myself, even with my PS5 and a 4K TV I find myself turning on my Switch more often.

aint no way im spending 450 euros for switch oled on its last leg when the new console is coming next year and will probably be 550 and the games will be 70-80

There is a somewhat realistic way for the switch to hit the 158.9 million unit number if the switch does receive 10 year support

gives more time for the switch 2 to cook I guess. Still hope people attention expecting too much from the switch 2, as powerful as the steam deck is it struggles to run most current games higher than 720p 30fps on low settings
