Weird question – why is the highest user-reviewed Nintendo game of all time an obscure DSiWare game called Metal Torrent?

I was looking at Nintendo’s games on Metacritic rated by user reviews to see where Pikmin 4 stacked up, and it’s currently at number three behind Super Metroid and, weirdly, a DSiWare title I’d never heard of called Metal Torrent. [You can see here](https://www.metacritic.com/game/ds/metal-torrent) that it sits at 9.6, the highest of any Nintendo game, despite the critical reviews being middling and almost all of the written reviews being negative.

I don’t think this is a case of “Oh it’s just so obscure that it only has a handful of reviews and because those reviews are positive and it’s drawing from a small sample size, the aggregate seems higher” either, because it has over a thousand reviews. While that’s not a lot compared to their more mainstream titles, it’s still a large enough sample size to require very, very few of the reviews to be negative or even middling to have a score that high.

Is this some kind of inside joke that I’m not in on, was it done in response/protest to something? Or is this game genuinely that big of an overlooked masterpiece?

Metacritic does not make any sense.

I own this game. It’s a generic shmup game and it’s a bit on the easy side. There’s nothing really special about it.

My guess would be some meme-brigading, as MC’s user scores are filled with stuff that make it mostly unusable.

It’s a small enough title that a relatively small amount of users could skew the scores bigly, so that might make it an interesting “joke” to play.

  4. user reviews are trash now, its probably some vtuber meme situation

Your first mistake was using metacritic.

You’re looking at it wrong. It’s not the highest.

    It’s 9.6 from 1397 people.

Now look at OOT, it’s 9.1 but it’s from 8097 people.

So you’d have to do some simple maths to worth out the score across same user base to determine the true highest rated score.

You could have one game at 10/10 from 5 people.
Another game at 8/10 by 5000 people.

    Which game is higher rated?

Never played it or heard of it, but I pulled up a video on YouTube. It looks a decent shmup in the bullet hell genre. It very well could have a cult following for fans of thosw type of games.

Metacritic and others rating site are not reliable site on this in this age. Too much promoted review in Critics and too much troll in User section to really take the site seriously

I wouldn’t trust Metacritic with anything. Aggregating user reviews is meaningless when there is no standard and users have not all played the same games. I would instead find YouTubers whose general tastes match up with yours, and compare Pikmin 4 to the games that you have previously played. Nobody understands your taste better than you do.

    That’s hilarious! Absolutely it’s shovelware!
I own it and love it! But man is it easy and good for a few games when you’re bored
It was a blast and I’m certainly confident it isn’t the amazing game design it’s sounding to be.
Thanks for the question! I might have to bring out that bad boy to play again (and beat) while in bed lol
