I think they should make a racing version of Smash Bros next

  2. Moon_Dark_Wolf

He’s a very humble man…I’ll give him that. He doesn’t feel egotistical in his statement. He knows exactly what Smash is like, and feels the sentiment that most Smash fans have.

I am curious to see how an Ultimate sequel would be approached…considering Sakurai has already said that Ultimate might very well be the last time we have all the characters together again.

  3. BoltOfBlazingGold

I think the sensible thing would be to prepare someone to take the lead as his successor in some capacity. He might do Smash 6, but what about 7 and 8? You bet people are going to ask about those and we can’t count on his goodwill to make a new game when he’s 70 or smt.

  4. Honestly for the switch 2 or whatever it’s called, I’m seeing more like a Super Smash Bros Ultimate Deluxe with serious revamps and new content.

New characters, improved graphics, better netcode and multiplayer experience..a lot can be done.

And from a business point of view, new character passes because it’s live revenues they will refuse to let go off obviously, just like Mario Kart 8 receiving DLC albeit it’s a 2014 wiiU port.

Time will tell, one thing is sure, it’s really not before several years anyways.

Nintendo’s got a long history of keeping their senior team members around involved creatively even when they’re no longer the primary project managers. I bet he’ll serve in an advisory role for whatever is next

smash bros is more than a game its camaraderie with him and Iwata-san over the years. I would like to see him find a successor eventually but he should definitely be involved every time.

I hope the new smash is either all of ultimate with 20 more characters or a totally new smash with new re imagined move sets for everyone. It’s crazy looking at basic ass link and Mario and then the crazy mechanics behind Steve and kazuya and other DLC characters. Nintendo’s core characters are some of the most iconic ones yet they have middling mechanics vs the power creep in DLC.

  8. I really loved the work Sakurai did for the franchise. Ultimate is the ultimate love letter to video games and it’s probably the best game in the franchise. I would like to see someone else take over for the franchise though. After Ultimate, I really feel like the current way of doing things is kinda at a dead-end, so it would be a good chance to let someone else take over and see what they do with it. Maybe reset the roster’s moveset.

I absolutely would not complain if they went with a port on the Switch 2 and just piled on more content. In fact, I’d love to see that. That would even open up the door for the return of a Melee style adventure mode or Brawl style Subspace mode, along with the return of trophies. *(and the missing Zelda characters from Brawl and Melee?)*

*But*…when the inevitable occurs…I’m at least hoping they reinvent the wheel a bit and add a new attack option. A for smash, B for special, Y for something new, and X remaining as the jump option.

As for the series itself…might sound ignorant, but honestly, I don’t see anything about the Smash series that is so complicated that it would never be the same without Sakurai’s involvement. Whether it comes down to programming technicalities or injecting the game with personality, I can’t imagine it would be impossible to find anyone who can fill either need.

  10. Man is going to end up being the Hayao Miyazaki of fighting games.

  11. RedHotPoopyPants

Personally, the direction I’d take Smash after Ultimate would be the same direction Midway/Netherrealm took Mortal Kombat after Armageddon.

How do you top an 80 character roster without making it feel muddled and overwhelming? You don’t. You reboot the series using a medium-sized collection of revamped fan favorites, add some brand new characters, and create a storyline involving the canonical events of the series thus far. Return to form with trophies, new and old single player modes, and a Subspace Emmisary sequel.

  12. WEEGEMAN

They should just port Smash Ultimate with some tweaks in additions. TBH anything less than a full roster would feel like a disappointment

  13. Next Smash Bros should be dialed back a ton, more of a refinement of the first game. I’d love to see them focus on that after seeing how big they could go with Ultimate.

  14. xanthonus

What Nintendo should try to focus on next Smash is revolutionizing fighting game netcode. Whoever cracks the netcode for fighting games will own the market for at least a console generation. Basically have a message of focusing on classic smash characters with incredibly solid multiplayer netcode. Then Nintendo should consider sharing that netcode with partners pushing fighting games and fighting esports to the Nintendo platform. Fighting games have gained a huge resurgence over the last few years so it would be a good investment.

I think the roster for the next game should be somewhere between Brawl and 4’s size. 40 characters, maybe throw in 10 as DLC later down the line. Revamp all of the older character’s movesets to make them feel fresh. Giver Mario some moves from Sunshine, Galaxy, Odyssey, etc.

  16. Arcade_Rave

We saw Metroid and Kirby in the hands of different people and they turned out great, as long as people with the right vision are chosen to lead the next project, then the next game will be good.

Only thing I have doubts about is the roster being based on the “Everyone Is Here” theme of Ultimate. I think it will be closer to Smash 4 where some characters leave with new ones filling the void.

  17. stefanokir

He’s right, but he’s also wrong.

He’s right in the sense that Smash Bros in its current format is a Sakurai creature to the bone (it has his humour, his game design principles, his style etc.) and I couldn’t imagine anyone else doing it.

He’s wrong in the sense that he’s assuming that Smash Bros will stay like this forever, and therefore is unsuitable for a new studio to handle.

I love Sakurai’s Smash Bros., but it’s undeniable that the formula is getting stale quite quickly: there weren’t any major gameplay changes since Melee and the refinements and graphical updates got slimmer and slimmer, to the point where Ultimate is basically Smash 4 with loads of extra content and very minor tweaks.

I mean, just the fact that Smash Bros is the only major Nintendo franchise that never experimented with 3D speaks volumes about how conservative the series has become: I could definitely use a reboot done by a different studio with a new take on the formula, especially if the Switch’s successor is backwards compatible (meaning people will still have access to a “traditional” SSB with Ultimate being playable)

  18. sebananas

This might sound weird but I think the way for Smash to move forward is to start over with the original characters, but in a 3D environment instead of a 2D one like now.

    >That said, fans have voiced their opinion that they’d prefer a deluxe edition of Smash Ultimate over Smash 6, something that has worked out pretty well for Mario Kart recently.

what the hell, fans. no. ultimate is already a deluxe version of all the past games, and it only came with a few new characters and a few new stages unless you pay extra money. the next game should feel fresh and new, not more of the same.

  20. Why do fans want a deluxe version of it? I don’t think that’s a good idea. Ultimate has a killer list of fighters and we might never see something like this again, sure, but I don’t think porting it to the next console would be a smart move. I’m hoping for a proper sequel and not a port.

  21. Dr_Dribble991

Smash Ultimate is literally the culmination of Smash Bros. If they’re going to continue Smash, I think a major shake-up would be necessary to justify the roster loss.

I’ve always thought that shifting to a 3D fighter would be the next logical step. Have Ultimate as the 2D fighter, with Smash 3D as an alternative.

  22. KolbStomp

Smash bros without Sakurai sounds like Halo without Bungie

  23. Redslayer50

    > That said, fans have voiced their opinion that they’d prefer a deluxe edition of Smash Ultimate over Smash 6, something that has worked out pretty well for Mario Kart recently.

I like MK8 Deluxe because they have dedicated Battle Mode stages, DLC stages, and bonus characters. The current Smash sorta does all that

  24. Own_Win_8913

Creo tendrían poner personajes nuevos idea, personajes clásicos nes, snes otros para se paten el trasero entre ellos…

  25. omniphoria

I think the new game should be something like “Smash Bros Eras” or “ Smash Bros Generations” where it focuses on adding all the iterations of each character (perhaps just as costumes/skins with alternate move sets)

You could have Mario from 64, Sunshine, Galaxies

Link from OoT, Twilight, Breath of the Wild

You get the picture. There are so many generations and versions of each character.

  26. MrFiendish

I don’t quite understand why he’s retiring…he’s not ancient, he could take a few years off and breathe, maybe get inspired by something and make a comeback.

Seriously, just take some time off. He deserves it!

  27. Elranzer

Smash 6 will be the same exact game as Ultimate with merely two additional fighters… Waluigi and Toad.

The “gimmick” is that it’s now 4K due to being exclusive to the Switch Successor hardware.

The game will outsell Call of Duty.

  28. Nakanon85

I don’t care what they do. Just don’t put a ton of sword fighters in it….ehm…fire emblem.
