Charles Martinet will no longer be voicing Mario. He will now moving on as role of Mario Ambassador.

  2. hyena142

I remember it was pretty noticeable that Mario and Wario sounded different in the last Direct, I guess this explains why. In any case this is the end of an era, Charles has been synonymous with Mario and all his other characters for so long. Luigi’s Mansion and WarioWare especially will feel different without him. Whoever the new actor is has big shoes to fill

watch it be Chris Pratt and Charlie Day lol

  3. Cragscorner

There was a lot of speculation after the latest WarioWare and Wonder trailers, so it’s nice to see them outright confirm that Martinet is no longer the voice of Mario.

I hope Martinet chose to step out of the role, but given the strange new title he has been given, it seems like something out of his control. My gut says this happened for nefarious reasons like hiring a non-union VA, getting a celeb in the role, or wanting to pay someone less senior less money. But there’s just no way to know!

After almost 30 years as the official Mario voice, he deserves to enjoy his retirement.

  5. legendkiller595

TLDR: Martinet is becoming an Ambassador for Nintendo and stepping away from being the voice of Mario

Also want to remind people that when the wonder trailer came out people speculated that Mario sounded different and thought martinet wasn’t the voice

  6. Swerdman55

Wow. We all knew this day would come, but it still comes as a surprise.

Charles Martinet is a legend, and I’m grateful for everything he’s done as Mario (and all of the other characters.)

  7. ForgottenForce

Hopefully this is what he wants and not something he was pushed into.

  8. Cedrico123

At this point, Nintendo probably has enough soundbites of Charles to not even need another voice actor for future games.

The end of an era. What a legend.

  9. PremSinha

Mods, of whichever posts share this news, please pin the one that specifies in its title that Charles Martinet is

    # NOT dead.

  10. WarEagle9

Honestly this is probably the best case Scenario. I hope Charles is still a part of Mario for as long as possible. I am happy Nintendo is treating him with the respect he deserves. With that said I wonder who is going to be the new voice.

  11. naynaythewonderhorse

I met him at TooManyGames this year, and I recall the person in front of me asking him if he’d be there next year and he said something about “this being his last year” or something. I kind of had a suspicion based on that.

  12. imlavanow

I remember some conspiracy theories about it not being him in Wonder, but it sounded the same to me. I wonder if that was his last game or not. I also wonder (last time using that word) if they’ll use… AI

Charles Martinet has been the original voice of Mario in Nintendo games for a long time, as far back as Super Mario 64. Charles is now moving into the brand new role of Mario Ambassador. With this transition, he will be stepping back from recording character voices for our games, but he’ll continue to travel the world sharing the joy of Mario and interacting with you all!
It has been an honour working with Charles to help bring Mario to life for so many years and we want to thank and celebrate him. Please keep an eye out for a special video message from Shigeru Miyamoto and Charles himself, which we will post at a future date.

I really don’t want to be dramatic, but it feels like a piece of my childhood has died. He’s still alive, thank god, and yes, his voice is still in the older games, but just knowing he’s officially not voicing him anymore is so goddamn sad. I wish him a very happy retirement though. His voice was there for me growing up and I’ll be eternally grateful for that.

  15. Kampy5567

Man’s almost 70 years old. I totally get being like “can’t you guys just pay me to travel and make convention appearances?” lol

~~Although, if this were in the cards for this year, Nintendo really should have let him record a track of the Mario movie dialogue for the home release as a send off to his long history~~

  16. EtherealProphet

Thank you so much for to letting us play your games, Charles. ❤️

  17. try_to_be_nice_ok

Now all characters will be voiced by his evil cousin Charles Wartinet.

  18. RealAnonymousBear

This is a shocker! I have a copy of Mario 64 I got signed by him so I’m going to treasure it for the rest of my life.

  19. CoolguyLane666

Mario Ambassador? So, is he training new VAs in the way of the plumber?

  20. Supportive_Bard648

Man I suspected that something was slightly off about Mario and Wario’s voice in their respective direct trailers, but now that our suspicions have been confirmed, it hits right in the feels.

Wishing the best of luck to the new voice actors (or actor? 😳) of our beloved mustachioed icons and a happy retirement to Charles! ♥️

  21. What a legend. Very happy that Nintendo is keeping him around so that he can get all he deserves for voicing arguably the most recognizable character of all time.

  22. IniMiney

Damn, people speculating about Martinet being replaced for Wonder might have been on to something 🙁

  23. whitepangolin

I wonder if Martinet is having health or voice issues. Very common.

  24. guy4guy4guy

I don’t if to cry tears of joy or sorrow

  25. HusseinRing

The role of Mario ambassador is best job he could have now, after years of being people’s childhood he deserves to go around the world and actually see with his own eyes the love they have for him

  26. AetherDrew43

Is Chris Pratt going to be the new voice of Mario?

  27. ThickMatch0

Kinda surprising. I believe Charles recently said in an interview he wanted to voice Mario until he died, so I’m kinda shocked he’s quitting before then.

  28. Blue_Robin_04

I knew it wasn’t him in the Wonder trailer.

  29. DantesInfernape

I thought they were going to say he died. Much better news!

  30. chaoticcranium

Ah, the esteemed Mario Ambassador from the Principality of Mario, where powerups and coins abound. I can think of no better title for this legend.

Good luck to Charles, the amazing and beloved voice of our collective childhood and what has to be hundreds of games at this point. This had to happen at some point, but it is still bittersweet.

I (Super Mario) Wonder who the new voice actor is.

  31. Maultaschenman

    # Chris Pratt is now full time Mario.

  32. Silentgunner

Like most people are saying they could take and use all the sound files from over the years and perhaps a change wouldn’t be noticed but man I definitely had a certain level of chills just thinking of all the years of playing Mario games and hearing “Mario’s” voice. End of an era. Much love & a happy retirement to the legend!

  33. Juanisawesome98

With thousands of voice samples for Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and many more, all of which are derivatives of the same lines, I think it’s time for them to retire from recording new lines. It’s been a ride.

  34. Hello_boyos

God that scared me for a second, I thought the dude died. I’ve heard fantastic things about him, my boss has met him and told me he is the nicest guy imaginable. Happy for him that he is finally moving on.

Plus, I’m sure Nintendo is sitting on a mountain of his archived voice recordings, so I doubt they’re actually gonna have to recast Mario for a long time.
