I’ve only been playing for 4 months grinding. I have old accounts but now I’ve really been going hard and I am trying to understand why a one star PvP would be good against a 3* and why some shadows you shouldn’t purify? Why? Some of the ones I purify give me 3 or 4 star mons so why not? Someone please explain this to me with kindness and understanding! I want to be a great trainer and I just hit level 41 and almost halfway done with the Eevee tasks!

Search Pokémon go PvP IVs and there will be a ton of sites that rank the “best” IV sets for each rank. Normally it is a very low attack, max defense and a close to max HP for Great league which is the main culprit here.
It has to do with how Attack more heavily raises CP so you can’t level up the Pokémon as much and still be under 1500 or 2500CP. In general stats are higher and better at higher levels.
CP is determined by IVs. Attack IVs are weighted to give more CP than Defense and Health.
For Leagues with a CP cap, you want a Pokemon with low Attack IVs and high Defense and Health IVs since you can level it up closer to the CP cap than one with high Attack IVs.
If there is no CP cap or if the Hundo/perfect Pokemon will fall under the CP cap when maxed out, then the Hundo will be better. For example, you can get a Hundo Umbreon to Level 50 and it will still be under 2500 CP. That makes the Hundo Umbreon the best Umbreon for Ultra League.
People have explained the pvp ivs thing so I’ll leave that besides confirming in master league (uncapped cp) then yeah 100% are the best. Otherwise you want ivs to get as close to the cap as possible. Think this way, a level 10 pidgey with max attack ivs in like pokemon sword isn’t gonna hit as hard as a level 30 pidgey with 0 attack ivs.
As for shadow pokemon, shadow pokemon do 20% more damage (and take 20% more damage) than non shadow/purified pokemon. This means in raids shadow pokemon are always 100% better (even with less ivs) because in raids you want highest dps.
In pvp it’s more tricky. Some pokemon are better when shadow, some are worse. It’s a case by case basis you’d have to look up for the specific mon.
You can use the app pokegenie to scan your pokemon and it will tell you which ivs are good in great/ultra etc. It’s a good starting point.
Take the great league for example, you can’t use Pokémon beyond 1500 cp.
So even if you have 3 star, you might only be able to level it up to 1483 for example, whereas a 2 star might get to 1499, which is still stronger than the 3 star
how are you level 41 without knowing anything about pvp IVs
Thank you so much everyone for the valuable information!!
I understand the idea but can someone tell me if it’s really THAT much of a difference between a (for example) 1485 CP pokemon with regular ”good” IVs like 15/13/14 versus a 1498 CP pokemon with pvp IVs. Does it even matter outside top ranks or pro play?
0-1attack&3-4defense&3-4hp is there any other string search that is better?
Pokegenie helped me wrap my head around all this a lot. The only “league” you want 3 or 4 star pokemon is masters and PVE use (raids, rockets etc). Anything with a capped CP limit, like great or ultra a mon with lower attack and various combinations of mid high to maxed defense and HP are much better. In the case of shadow you’re exchanging a significant attack bonus for a reduce defense, some mon are such tanks anyway that defensive deficit is hardly noticeable while the increased attack is very much noticeable.
The CP formula is attack weighted. So a low attack pokemon can often be powered up to a higher level than a higher attack pokemon while remaining under a leagues CP cap. The higher level pokemon has better stats resulting in a higher stat product.
Low attack high defense high stamina is best for most pokemon in any league with a cp limit (great and ultra, for example). This is because the attack IV is the one out if the three that rises the CP the most (a 15-0-15 will have more cp than a 0-15-15 if they are the same level). Since attack is the biggest contributor to cp, having lower attack means lower cp, which means you can power up that pokemon more (rise its level) than if it had a high attack IV. Powering up a pokemon increases all of its stats, so, in general, his makes the pokemon way more bulky, in exchange for bit less attack.
Also, NEVER purify pokemon to raise their IVs (unless that pokemon has a mega or you really want to for some reason idk). This is because shadow pokemon have a 20% increased attack in exchange for 20% less defense. For raids, the most important factor is that pokemon’s damage per second. Thus, that sacrifice in defense is completely worth it to get that extra attack. This 20% is huge, since a 0% iv shadow pokemon will do better in raids than a 100% iv purified or normal pokemon
Simple. Attack is the devil for PVP. Remember this and you cant go wrong
Levels are more important than IV’s. IV are highly overrated anyways but IV increase the CP of a pokemon by quite a bit, specially the attack IV. Levels of the pokemon also increase the CP but less than IVs. So if you have lower IVs the level of the pokemon can be higher untill you reach the CP cap for a league.
Search go stadium thank me later
I guess the PvP IV thing is allready explained.
General a higher level mon has more bulk and may or may not reach one more fast move/tank one more and saves you the game. More important is a proper line-up and moveset in youre mons.
With the shadow mons- weather if you purify it or not is always up to you since it is yours. But shadow mons do have some pros and some cons, likewise purified mons.
Shadow’s do 20% more damage but are 20% more frail. They also cost 20%(or 10%) more dust and candy. And a bad IV shadow, outdamges a perfect normal counterpart. In Raids 20% more damage = fast and more personal damage = more balls to catch/ things getting “easier” (Mega-rayquaza was duoable with 1 mega-abomasnow 4 shadow mamoswine and 1 shadow mewto.).
For PvP the getting 20% more damage part plays a thing too… And there things might looks different. Best example would be sableye and wobbuffet. To have access to return in their decent move pool a purified one does better in PvP- in general.
