  1. I only care about sales in the last 36 months.

Well it’s the games library for me…

The title of the OP is a bit misleading. The source (VGChartz, which I recall being a little questionable) is saying that the Switch outsold the PS5 and XBX launch aligned (which would have been 34 months ago for both the PS5 and XBox Series X).

The Switch sold more in its first 34 months on the market than either the PS5 or XBX since we only have 34 months of data for the latter two

I love my Switch, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best console. I’m confident the price point has a lot to do with it. Additionally, the Switch reaches both regular gamers and the more casual person who only plays games a couple times a month.

Maybe the steam deck was, but we don’t know

This just in… water is wet. Everyone knows this as it is a fun console

And has the worst version of multiplatform games to boot I’m looking at you mk1.

  8. Vagabond_Sam

Clearly a number of months that was selected based on the outcome.

  9. MasterQuester

Best selling console, still worse console of it’s respective generation and the current one too

I love my Switch, but it’s too bad people kept buying it like crazy so late in its lifespan despite how outdated it is. I really hope the successor is here sooner rather than later. MK1 proves how difficult it is to have a current gen experience on it

It is no surprise as nintendo switch is the family console which has a wider audience whereas the other 2 demographics are teenagers to adults.

That doesn’t means it has a better library of games.

Thank goodness. How would I have been able to validate my launch Switch purchase had it not been the best selling console of the last 34 months?

It definitely tracks – the Switch’s portability and handheld ability mixed with a nice mix of family friendly games, great AAA games, and ports like Witcher 3 go a long way.

Plus it is also one of the few consoles I routinely see people getting multiple for the same household – you don’t hear about many siblings each with a standalone PS5 but you do hear about, and see via Reddit, multiple Switches and Switch Lites around for one family

Ugh had to sell mine to make rent a couple months ago. Miss that thing. Hoping I’m in a better place when the Switch 2 launches.

The real news is that neither the PS5 or Xbox Series consoles are selling on pace with the Switch, based on the respective sales data for the first 34 months of each console.

And it’s not surprising in the slightest. PS5 is still selling amazingly well and is even outpacing the PS4, but it’s still a reality that we are in a cross-gen period of unprecedented length that makes upgrading nowhere near as urgent. Xbox Series is selling okay, but no surprise it’s the weakest seller due to the brand struggling with public perception for the last decade. Meanwhile, in 2017 the Switch was seen as groundbreaking for it’s hybrid model while also managing to have the lineup of exclusives in it’s first year that arguably outclasses the existing lineups of either PS5 or Xbox Series after almost three years.

I’m happy with my PS5 and Series S, but Switch was just something else. And if Nintendo has a year of exclusives lined up for Switch 2, I wouldn’t be surprised for it to outpace the current Switch.

Now just imagine how much Switch 2 will sell

Wait, why is the x-axis on the Japanese chart green? … Oh, that’s the X-box line, never mind. #WiiUHumor

Covid’s been good to some companies…

  19. Riomegon

Time for Microsoft to buy them and right this ship.

  20. Its probably not best to compare switch numbers to the mainline consoles. Handhelds have always been different starting with the price being about 1/2 (at least on release).

For more info on why this ratio 34 is important, Google “Nintendo R34”

Didn’t the pandemic played a huge part of that? PS5/Series X/S had issues at launch and also chip issues.

  23. Those good sales numbers also gives it an extra reason for Nintendo to hold on an announcement/launch for the Switch 2.

The more money the Switch keeps printing, to more time they have to tinker on the new console. Even though I badly want an ‘upgrade’, I think it’s also a good this allows Nintendo to make the next console even better, not that a lot will happen to it since pretty much something has to be finalized so production can start when they decide to move towards a launch.

    And it’s not…very hard…to see whyyyyyyyyyyyyy

I bought the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet edition of the Switch, because the design really caught my eye on the console and the dock.

I’ve since bought 36 games for it and have been obsessed with it ever since.

Steamworld Heist is the first I’ve finished fully. Best 5 dollars(on sale) I’ve spent on a game.

Scarlet is a chore. The world is so big and I’m already confused with what I’m doing.

Arceus is great. Perfect pokemon game.

BotW can also be a chore, but less so when you get the hang of it.
