    far from goty.

    nintendo simps strike again.

  2. killakev564

Idk about that when you have Tears of the Kingdom in the same year. As well as all the other huge titles but we’ll see I guess

  3. SomeManSeven

Baldurs Gate 3 is my GOTY. I love all the 2d mario games but i cant imagine this one beating out BG3, for me at least.

  4. Jigsaw-Complex

Not this year it isn’t. Nothing personal against the game. I am excited for it, but this is a super stacked year; ain’t no way this is taking the gold.

  5. hiruma_kun

Probably a good game but doesn’t stand a chance against Tears of the Kingdom and Baldurs Gate 3.

People shutting this down because it isn’t their chosen GOTY choice are completely missing the point. Not everyone is into a multiple hundreds of hour long RPG or adventure game. GOTY is a largely subjective and personal thing depending on who you ask.

BG3 is the highest reviewing game of the year, but it won’t be mine because I have zero interest in ever playing it because of the combat style.

My GOTY so far is either Starfield or ToTK, but if this hits in the same way Mario Odyssey did, it could absolutely be Game of the year.

I’m sure Wonder will be a wonderful game don’t get me wrong but Totk is the only Nintendo game that has a chance of winning Goty this year because it’s Zelda

  8. Excited for this game, but it’s not going to be a contender over Tears of the Kingdom.

I’ve dumped about 150 hours into TotK, and I’ll probably end up 100%’ing Super Mario Wonder in 50 hours. Even Mario Odyssey, I got all the Power Moons in like 50 hours, and 3D Mario games historically have more content than 2D Mario games. Tears of the Kingdom is just stacked with content on top of content on top of content, and it’s all top notch and refined. Wonder does look like it has some solid replayability though with all the character choices and badges and everything.

Then we also had Pikmin 4 this year too. Nintendo is having a great year to say the least, so it’s not a bad thing this game won’t be GotY, Nintendo is just in a great spot right now.

Edit: Everyone else on this sub is also pretty much saying Mario’s not going to beat Zelda, but because I mention how much gameplay you can get out of Zelda, I get downvoted? Whether TotK was 20 hours or 2000 hours, it’s still a top game of the year when it comes to gameplay, world design, art style, sound design, music, etc. You guys are nitpicking the wrong things from my comment when I still had almost nothing but positive things to say about Mario.

People just not understanding how good Mario game design is (or why that matters) really shows you how superficial modern “GOTY” culture is.

  10. JamesUpton87

Not this year. The competition is way too stacked.

  11. Likezoinks305

Mario 2D games are always a treat – but they’re nothing ground breaking anymore. This must be a bait article. It would never win and neither deserves to win GOTY

  12. EarthwormZim33

A bit off topic, but I find it interesting that when Metroid Dread came out there were a bunch of people saying no side-scroller should ever cost $60 in 2021. But now in 2023 I haven’t seen a single criticism for the price of Super Mario Wonder.

Regardless of if it ends up being my GOTY, I will happily get it and enjoy it. I love side-scrollers to death.

  13. People really want their game to be classified as GOTY contender so they feel like they have a measure of objectivity for their favorites when GOTY is always subjective even if your most trusted gaming outlet or Geoff Keighley demands it.

  14. crunchypillooww

No chance. It is either totk or baldur’s gate 3

  15. It’s got a good chance in some categories, but I don’t see it taking the overall GOTY when Zelda is going to be in there as well.

  16. _DontStayTheSame_

Sorry, maybe in a dry video game year it would have a chance. But 2023’s been packing major heat through and through. Tears of the Kingdom, Street Fighter 6, Baldur’s Gate 3, Starfield, Final Fantasy XVI, Hi-Fi Rush, Diablo 4, SpiderMan 2.

Good luck, there’s just been an astounding number of bangers to keep pace with

  17. JR4369592

Being a contender in this year would guarantee that this game will be excellent, which is fine by me.

  18. AduroTri

Baldur’s Gate 3 vs Tears of the Kingdom. That’s the game of the year matchup.

  19. 0shadowstories

Guys you’ll never believe this but you can actually pick a GOTY that someone else doesn’t. In fact, you could make your own list of top 10 games of the year in no particular order if you’re feeling feisty. Just because one game wins GOTY at the Geoff Awards doesn’t mean another won’t win at another show or from another publication. There’s GOTY Editions for games that are broken messes, there’s no GOTY Awards for fantastic games, it’s all meaningless lmao

  20. justforkikkk

Are people now seriously discussing whether an unreleased game is or can be GOTY? Maybe actually play it first…

  21. pepelaughkek

    Lol GOTY. Get a grip.

Releases the same year as Baldur’s Gate 3, Tears of the Kingdom, Resident Evil 4 Remake. Spiderman 2 and STALKER 2 are still on the way.

    2D Mario has no shot.

  22. BernyMoon

    I don’t care what game wins the GOTY. Super Mario Wonder is gooing to be A M A Z I N G.

  23. ZeldaFan158

2D Mario won’t win GotY especially in an already stacked year. It’ll definitely be an improvement over NSMB, though.

  24. ballsmigue

It’s not. Hell, I’d argue even ToTK isn’t.

  25. is this the new trendy thing now? Every game that comes out is a game of the year contender?

  26. MerasmusGaming

Well, considering every winner is some soulless, boring third-person game (+ whatever the hell It Takes Two attempted to be), I can’t see a fun game actually winning.

  27. Walink92

I’ll never understand Nintendo fans who snub or downplay 2D mario. I’m 100% sure it will be better than most “contenders” for g.o.t.y, even those released by nintendo itself.
