Super Mario Bros. Wonder removed collision in co-op. Thoughts?

I just saw Wonder will have no co-op collision. For me, it makes me wonder why I’d bother with co-op. I’m sure everyone has different reasons for playing it in co-op, but bumping into each other, bouncing off heads, throwing each other, vying for footing on platforms.. that was 99% of the fun! Definitely still getting the game, but I may stick to single player. With no collision, it seems like everyone will just be doing their own thing, for the most part. What do all of you think about the change?

It does make co-op less annoying with lower skilled players not interfering with your movement. But on the other hand the chaos of multiplayer was kind of fun sometimes.

I kinda like it because I can play co-op longer without getting frustrated and thinking of how much better it would be to play single player without interferences.

I can understand, but yea it should be a toggle

  3. TheReturningMan

As someone who played the game at Nintendo Live, it’s a great change. Makes using all the powerups and interacting with all the world elements much less of a hassle.

  4. rossmark

It would be cool to at least have an option to turn it on

Big fan of this change. For me, it’s definitely frustrating trying to platform while other players smash into you and knock you off platforms. I can understand why some people would enjoy the chaotic aspect of bumping into each other – but for me it just makes Mario too frustrating to enjoy.

  6. Half the fun of multilayer is yelling at your friends and then trying to sabotage them

My wife would use me to reach high places before. I’m bummed it was removed.

  8. With collision they’d have the desire to space out levels to accommodate, and there’s a real tension between optimizing for that and what feels best for single player.

  9. Does that count for local multilayer too? I mean for playing on one switch with friends

I appreciate that. One of the most frustrating things about playing Yoshi’s Crafted World on multiplayer was the constant accidental riding on each other

Wish it was a toggle. When the wife and I play we love the crazy things that can happen from accidentally jumping on each other then it turns into a “hey this place is super high “f” doing it the right way bounce me up”
But on the flip side playing 4 player mode with family/friends has ended with people getting upset of the silliest thing if someone accidentally kills them.

I appreciate that, and it’ll be interesting to see for sure, but I wish it was a toggle lol

I’ll miss the chaos, the collision between players made it a lot of fun since you could jump off of peoples heads and throw them, makes nsmbw one of my favourite games, still looking forward to this but I would have liked the collision better

The collision was the reason my wife and I hated coop. It make things harder and more frustrating especially when one or both of us were rusty with the game. Hearing that Wonder is doing away with coop just raised my excitement for the game!

It’s everything I asked for cuz I’d rather have fun than be frustrated with cheap deaths.

It should be togglable like the assist features in Mk8. i have no problems with making these games easier, 90% of players would prefer to not have collision, but trolling the shit out of my friends in these older games was probably my favourite feature

So happy for this change. When my kids would play previous games they would all just get frustrated with each other and not play very long. Would be great to have a toggle though.

The collision made me stop playing new super Mario bros 2d games. Loved the ds game but haven’t enjoyed playing multi-player with siblings growing up. This is a huge bonus and makes me consider Wonder now.

My children love playing co op and while I enjoy the shenanigans of it, they talk mad shit when I die.

Turning off collision thrills me so I may now be the shit talker.

  20. Would have been a nice optional feature for sure. I too enjoyed it for the chaos and half the time screwing iver your friends

  21. levi_verzyden

As a dad gamer who’s been playing Mario his whole life and now plays with his kid, this is a welcome addition. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to beat a level and your kid keeps picking you up randomly then tossing you off a ledge. Or being asked to ‘pick me up and take me’. What is even the point in playing?

You won’t learn to be good if I just carry you the whole time.

  22. Minimum-Release-1198

Why couldn’t they make this optional?

  23. It probably makes it better to play seriously, but for me thats what single player is for. Multi was entirely about messing with each other.

  24. Nintendomandan

I’d be fine with no collision online to avoid the trolls, but it should at least be a togglable option for local

  25. Yrmsteak

I’m sure there are a ton of players who can beat all of the new mario bros.es solo without losing a life on their first playthru because of the familiar platforming mechanics that mario bros.es all share. I’m one of those players (or close to it in the case of the most recent) and the additional stage hazard of friendly collision and screendragging makes multiplayer so much more fun and challenging than solo play.

I really hope this is a toggleable option

  26. Good, collision in the “new” series was a nightmare.

  27. rebbsitor

Lack of collision does two big things for the game:

    * Makes griefing other players impossible (at least by physically interfering with them), which is common in random play

    * Allows the networking code to be looser. It doesn’t matter as much if everyone stays perfectly sync’d because it doesn’t have to deal with all 4 players interacting directly with each other. It should be a lot smoother than multiplayer in Mario Maker for this reason.

  28. nonessential-npc

I would rather it be an option I can turn on or off, but I can’t say I’m upset that I’ll never be used as a footstool again.

  29. I wish it was a toggle instead. Not a deal breaker though.

I am amused by your take, OP :p

Genuinely, I have *never* liked co-op in these games, and getting bopped by other players was always a big reason I found it annoying. Note, the bopping was never intentional. I always played with my wife, or a young sibling, and back then it was a bit of a struggle. I wasn’t mad at *them* obviously, but I just didn’t find it very fun making a jump, but then actually no I didn’t, due to a thing outside my control.

Granted, they’re older and my wife is better at games now, so I don’t think this would be much of an issue anymore, but still. I just never really enjoyed it as a mechanic, so if anything it actually makes me consider trying it again for this game.

Call me a stick in the mud but I cannot stand playing co-op games with people who just want to screw around and sabotage each other for shits and giggles.

I had one friend who was on the same page as me, and the collision actually did help us when we coordinated to help each other, like bouncing the other player up to a high ledge, or to keep them off the ground when trying to farm 1ups. So I can see how it would be something of value that is lost.

I think the best option would have been to be able to toggle it on and off so I could choose based on who i’m playing with.

  32. New Supar Mario co-op was utter fucking chaos in the worst way. Anything to reduce that would be appreciated.

  33. HuckleberryHefty4372

So I can’t throw Luigi into an enemy to “test out” if it’s safe anymore? What is the point of multiplayer then?

  34. moose_man

I agree, it makes co-op all benefit with no cost. I understand why for kids/parents it’s a big improvement, but since I’ll be playing with adults with healthy emotional reactions, it’s a little less interesting for me.

  35. Iamverydumb1

4 player SMB co-op was always a bit of a cluster fuck, at least in my experience, but that was actually part of the fun! No collision would also be a big detriment to 2 player co-op. Of course all of this could be solved with the option to enable/disable collision.
