Yeah, because they are awesome and defined our childhoods. 30 years ago, the adults could’ve been making bank this whole time, if they had listen to the kids at the time. Now 30 years later; people are just gaining this insight??

Because as opposed to other AAA developers, they make it a priority to ensure flagship entries for these two franchises are well made, properly finished, and always deliver fun experiences. You can criticize Nintendo all you want, but it is a fact that in a sea of developers releasing shameless unfinished stuff, they make sure Mario and Zelda titles are held to certain standard. Not to mention, they’ve done it for over three decades. That’s why

They’ve done great work with their IPs for decades, and we enjoy the games they’ve brought us.

May it continue for another 40 years. Nintendo is responsible for lots of great memories and experiences for loads of people, myself included, and for that I’m extremely grateful.

Zelda is the only reason I own anything from Nintendo.

It helps they are franchises that can be reinvented in numerous different ways and aren’t completely tied down to a concrete story or gameplay style.
Like I love Uncharted, but all it can ever be is a 3rd person shooter. While Mario has been basically everything under the sun.

Effort and giving a shit?

Maybe because their games are amazing and fun and classics?

Caring about and having pride in their IP first, rather than focusing first on how to make the most money.

TLDR ; Focus on making games fun, mix of experienced OGs (vision) and fresh talent (experimentation) along with dev team from diverse backgrounds (not just gamers)
So I see three pillars here. {The real Triforce}
Experiential Focus, Right mix and implementation of old/new dynamic, diversity (outsiders, not just gamers)
These days, when we hear diversity, it is in a very different context but here I mean diverse relative to the field of action.

Its called the power of nostalgia.

Rigorous quality control.

“Make good games”. All they had to say.

They care more about devs&their outcomes, not shareholders.

Mario is timeless. There’s something about him and his cast of characters that just endures. He’s for everyone. Not just kids, not just adults that grew up with him. I imagine I’ll be playing Mario games when I’m an old fart sitting in my rocking chair.

Pokemon stayed relevant without giving a shit though.

Both franchises are in need of a massive reboot . If Ninty gives us Breath of the Wild 3 that would be so boring .
TheGodOfFuck
Add Metroid to that as well.

The key imho has been right from the start SOLID BASICS:
* Original Mario = 1. Amazing Physics “feel” in the Jumping. You could get subtle differences in how to jump to achieve different outcomes on the fly = High Quality basic gameplay second to second of playing. 2. Amazing Design the Mario features were “Classic”.
* Original Zelda = Nailed RPG: Hero’s Journey with great design and attention to depth and details.
So everything they have done has more or less built off sound basics. Then add in some extras:
* Mario Kart (original) turned the Mario IP into Party Game and these couch-coop/vs or party games with adorable characters is some of the most fun video-game play ever because it’s high quality social with friends imho. Throw in Tennis, Party, Brawl, Golf too…
* Zelda Ocarina of Time with the controller as a musical input device and such innovations making interacting more enjoyable and depth to the emotions of the adventure.
Personally I’d argue some of the recent versions have leaned a bit heavily on graphics and bling look and less on core gameplay innovation but it’s still got the basics so high in quality. They always hit the “house style” look of both to the highest quality which delights fans/players also is a big IP boost.
djkhan23
(because the games are consistently great)
Significant_Option
Because they only pay attention to them and let every other franchise burn

You spelled F-Zero wrong

Because they’re not produced by Gamefreak

It’s because they prioritize quality over quantity. I’m old enough that I’ve been playing Zelda & Mario since the NES and there’s always been a substantial wait between mainline entries, barring OOT and Majoras mask and perhaps Mario galaxy 1&2. They don’t feel the need to put out yearly entries to try and stay on the top of the sales charts like some studios *cough*ubisoft*cough* because they know when they do put out a product finally it will make an absolute killing since quality is almost guaranteed
