I highly recommend this channel to anyone who is confused about legal actions by game companies. This guy always does a great job of not just explaining legal documents, but also the context they exist in, aka why something like this was created in the first place.

Smash players complain about this shit every single time something like it happens, and yet they still go about their business like nothing happened and things barely change for them anyways. They are perpetual victims

Smash players really don’t understand just how good they have it with Nintendo not being involved in their shitty competitive scene
People bitch and moan constantly about how Nintendo needs to support Smash’s competitive scene, and that’s just never going to happen. And if it does, the competitive scene will bitch and moan about how unfair Nintendo is to them.
If Nintendo takes over, the Smash Competitive scene will lose a shit ton of freedom they have compared to other FGCs.
You’re telling me that you want the Multi-billion dollar family friendly corporation who threatened to sue scientists for naming a cancer string after Pokémon in charge of managing the affairs of your competitive scene?
Bitch, they’re going to enact goddamn zero tolerance. Half of the pro competitive players wouldn’t be allowed to fucking compete because they’d damage Nintendo’s sponsorship PR when the News sites get on them.
Nintendo not being involved in the Smash competitive scene is the best thing they can do for these people…

So, like so many suspected or even outright said, the guidelines were not the issue the competitive community made them out to be and are, in fact, Nintendo spelling out its policies (to cover their asses) and standardizing to be in line with other competitive communities and wider esports guidelines. I am completely unsurprised that people overreacted and created a mountain out of a molehill. This was an excellent breakdown of the entire situation!
