Rhydon has always had an impressive cp to me. Has a lower base stat total than golem, but a much higher cp. Not even a full evolution, either

CP is directly based off MSG stats so… none?
The issue isn’t CP seeming high for a given Pokemon, it’s that the game tells you fuckall about the stats used to get to that value.

I have noticed more pokemon that have unreasonably low CP for how strong they are. Not all of this can be blamed on strong moves. Obviously Greninja with Water Shuriken and Hydro Cannon does huge damage because the moves provide fast charging and high damage. But Blissey with fairly unremarkable moves such as Zen Headbutt and Psychic can beat Machamp’s with fighting type fast and charged moves that are 25% higher CP.

Nihilego can go to a WAY higher cp than I ever expected, i’m pretty sure a hundo Nihilego can go to 4500 cp, I expected it to be a big damage small cp pokemon. Tbf it IS a “legendary” so its cp would be higher, i might just be dumb lmao

Recently caught a wild hundo Espeon & pretty surprised it caps out at 3583. Probably 3600 with best buddy.

Misdreavus originally had no evolution so it has stats closer to a fully evolved Pokémon.

I don’t think none of them really have unreasonably high max CP. I do think that some of them have unreasonably low max CP though. Blastoise is one that comes to mind.

Misdreavus was once a stand alone Pokémon (no evolution) so for it to have lower stats would make it even worse

Roselia and Cherrim. I get it that they were supposed to be strong but holy fuck they’re an apocalypse in early game, while cherrim Doesnt have any exolaination for it’s strenght

Misdreavus makes sense because it was a good Pokémon in gen 2-3 before it even got an evo in gen 4, due to it’s special attack, speed, good move pool and and typing. If this seems high, you probably don’t really know much about Pokémon (avg Pokémon go player)

Ponyta maxes over 1900 cp. Back in gen 1 it had the highest base stat total of all un-evolved pokemon that can evolve.

3 things are going on here.
1) base cp is attack * sqrt(defense×stamina)
2) some moves are just much better than others to an obscene degree
3) the higher version of msg attack is weighted SEVEN times more in pogo’s attack stat. So, if you have 150 attack and 10 special attack in msg, pogo averages it to like 132 base attack. Which is then adjusted by speed. +5% attack and defense for each 25 points of base speed above 75. So, fast pokemon with one really, really high attack stat get crazy strong.
ATT = Mult × (7×Att1 + Att2)/4
DEF = Mult × (5×Def1 + 3×Def2)/4
STA = 1.75 HP + 50
Mult = (Speed – 75)/500 + 1
Where Att1 and Def1 are the higher of the Attacks and Defense values and Att2 and Def2 is the lower value.
