Let’s keep in mind that Nintendo are not the ones that make the Pokémon games.
And frankly, this seems like an odd thing to me? Like, we can already bring our Pokémon across multiple games, with some record of where they are originally found. What is the next big step beyond that? Gamefreak just went through a ton of effort to remove transfer based moves, and everything else is pretty consistent already.

If a patent is discovered that usually means it is an idea they had with no current plans on actively developing it. If this was something they were actively working on for a product or service typically the patent would be filed but wouldn’t be available to be viewed by the public.
