Red canonically caught every kantos region Pokemon including Mewtwo, won in his pokemon league, and is a canonically skilled trainer.

Oddly enough, Red & Pikachu has a completely different kit than Ash & Pikachu so youd be using them for different types of challenges. And they're both really strong.

Ash is champion of two regions in comparison to red who’s only champion of kanto, so skill isn’t a issue either. Ash is a competent trainer and can probably beat red.

There is absolutely no way Ash comes near to beating Red. Let me tell you why. Let’s use Ash’s champion team. Red’s Charizard 1 shots Mega Lucario, Red’s Venusaur beats Pikachu, Red’s Blastoise could take out Gengar, a switch back to Charizard takes out Sirfetch’d. Red’s Lapras takes out Dracovish and Dragonite. Red still has 2 unused Pokémon and Ash is out. There goes your theory.
