As someone who has only recently returned to the game and is therefore not even close to completing the quest, what makes the Master Ball so special? Is this just a guaranteed catch, like in the games?

I would love to see some statistics of the percentage of people who completed this task Vs the percentage of people who usually complete tasks. I guarantee it will be lower.
I know it was meant to be a hard task, for a top tier item. But it was just so hard for so many players. I just missed out with 5 raids after using most of my raid passes as well. I had reasonable access to a gym, but not much time. So many days when the gym I had access to, just kept spawning 5 star raids or 3 star shadow raids. I couldn’t solo them, and there weren’t many other people using the gym either. It was very frustrating, and if another one comes around, I’ll give the raid portion a miss.
