It's bugged like the Zygarde cells. You gotta restart the game in the end of the route and Mateo will appear. Just did my first gift trade earlier today 😉

I got Mateo on Day 0! No issues getting him either. Was super cool to do. I really hope this means more NPC's are coming to the game!

I did 4 routes. I got 3 cells and met with him only 1 time.

i was out last night with two others and all three of us got mateo on our first route.
Didn't appear in my brothers account, all I did was click on the Pokestop or gym where the route ends and he appears.
Hmmm. Wondertrade in a game where hacking in Pokémon is almost nonexistent? This could be huge!

JTGily, I opened Pokémon GO yesterday around 4pm to check out the Raids to see if there was anything I wanted, there wasn't. At the same time I got a Special Research called: A Route to New Friendships. Did a Route and he popped up for me on the first Route of the day. You'll get him at some point today as well, just be patient and keep trying bro.

I was lucky enough to encounter Mateo on my first try. Then, I followed another route & no Mateo at the end of that route. It must be like Zygarde cells, no guarantee that Mateo will appear at the end of route.

This new NPC Mateo in Pokemon Go seem nothing super excited about his role in Pokemon Go.
Of course you can able exchange gift with Mateo but the gift was random mean you can't select any gift from any part of the world and you can meet Mateo only once in a day.
If players can select gift from any country, players will always select gift from country which is has less Pokemon Go players. For example Mid East Asia country Palestine Israel Jordan and South Asia Nepal Bangladesh. Bhutan.
I encountered Mateo first try. Pretty cool feature
I got Mateo by clicking on the gym at the end of the route. I didn't see him anywhere, and just to check, I clicked on the gym and suddenly he was on-screen and talking to me. We had our gift exchange and that was that. Very easy. So if you don't see Mateo at the end of your route, try clicking on the stop/gym where the route ends.
