Crazy to me they would go backwards after adding OLED to the switch 1…unless I’m missing something.

Ah man I really hope they have an OLED version. Three main things I’m looking for, outside of just “more power”, is OLED, hall effect joycon or something similar and backwards compatibility. I never bought an OG Switch but ended up getting an OLED in 2022 as kind of a follow-up for the 3DS. The screen is fantastic and I don’t really want to go to a LCD from that.

Just LCD again is mildly disappointing. I never got any Switch model past my Ver. 1 from 2017 but I heard really great things about the OLED and especially how games like Metroid Dread looked on it

Games will be compatible, which was a concern for many.

Probably doing it to keep the price below $400.
MarcsterS
They’re probably aiming for a $400 price point, but I hope they do have an OLED option at launch.

What’s the rumored spec on this again and how does it compare to PS5 and XBOX Series X?

Yeah I think I’m gonna wait until a revision with an OLED screen comes out for the Switch 2.
We saw it with the Switch (original in 2017, better battery life in 2019, OLED screen in 2021), the 3DS (original in 2011, XL in 2012, “New” in 2014), the DS (original in 2004, Lite in 2006, DSi in 2008), the Game Boy Advance (original in 2001, SP in 2003, backlit SP in 2005, micro in 2005), and the Game Boy (original in 1989, Pocket in 1996, Color in 1998).
Each revision of Nintendo’s handheld every 2 years or so has been better than the launch release for decades at this point.
I never upgraded to the OLED Switch because I already have my better-battery-life Animal Crossing Switch. I would expect the Switch 2 to at least have an OLED screen…
gunmasterltd
Well if it high quality LCD, and not have huge bezel like original Switch, I’m fine with it. 8 inch screen is great, imagine bigger screen OLED revision.
zetcetera
OLED would be preferable, but I do 99% of my Switch gaming on my TV so it doesn’t affect me too much either way
SicJake
Not the same but I can only compare my Steamdeck OLED screen to my original model Switch with a LCD screen
OLED screen is really REALLY nice but it’s not a deal breaker. If Switch 2 has LCD, it’s fine as long as it’s bigger
jesternarf
It’ll be just the New Nintendo Switch XL.
YellowFew6603
As someone who plays docked 99% of the time I’m not concerned personally, but feel for those who play handheld.
NeighborhoodPlane794
I’m not happy about it, but I understand it. You want to launch a console at a fair price and oled panels cost a lot. I just wish there was an oled option at launch instead of making me buy a second console down the road
kaisle51
Aw, I’ve still got my 2017 Switch and I’ve been holding off on buying the OLED in hopes of this new Switch having an OLED screen. Hopefully its screen is at least as big as the OLED one

I guess LCD for 1st gen, to keep the price mass market. For budget reasons, it would be smarter to invest 1st gen into processors, ram, memory, controllers, as those carry through the Switch 2 lifespan, then secondary parts can be invested into once primary part prices come down. Like for 2nd gen, a better screen, speakers, etc and maintain a similar price point while possibly dropping price on the 1st gen one.

I thought the rumor was Nintendo switched to OLED exclusively for the Switch 2, and that the 8-inch LCD described here was the one that ended up in the PlayStation Portal?
It seems like old rumors (ie. LCD screen, 8 GB RAM) are being dug up by major outlets, but the so-called “more reliable” sources are saying the specs are going to be more favorable (ie. OLED screen, 12-16 GB RAM)
ghee
There’s a lot of speculation on it being very similar to the original switch. In that case it could feel like a downgrade over the oled switch
Walnut156
I have a soft spot for this rumor and leak season of a new console. Its always fun to see it all come out slowly and then once we see the actual thing we can see what ones were spot on or just clearly made up.
Wolfhunter9727
Smart. Just so they can sell us the “upgrade” in a couple years.
IloveKaitlyn
fuckkkk, going from an OLED screen back to a LCD screen is a massive bummer. If you don’t have an OLED screen and don’t know the difference, stay that way! OLED absolutely ruined LCD screens for me. Especially because I know a few years down the line Nintendo will double dip again.
Crowbar_Faith
An LCD screen would guarantee that I won’t buy one until an OLED model is launched. It should be standard now for handhelds. I get that it’s cheaper but still, you know they’re going to put the LCD out first simply to double dip later with an OLED.
Alon945
That’s fine especially if it keeps the price down some.
The handheld screen doesn’t need to be crazy. I just hope the load times are fast and it has really decent power. I’d be happy at PS4 level + SSD fast loading.
CytronicsZA
Don’t see myself buying a console with a standard LCD again. More than happy to wait for inevitable OLED.
RhythmRobber
The only good way to do it is to have both an LCD and OLED model available to choose on release, but Nintendo cares more about saving money than giving us a good choice.
The problem with releasing an OLED later is that there’s no great time to do it. 6 months to a year after launch? You’re gonna piss off everyone that just bought the base model. 3-4 years later? You’ve wasted a lot of people’s time waiting.
They need to give two options at launch and charge more for OLED. They’re not some poor little company that can’t afford to launch with two different models.
Ratix0
LCD i sleep.
Its a huge step backwards now that I’ve experienced OLED.
__adrenaline__
Yeah I’m gonna sit this one out lol. Could not go back to an LCD after using the OLED Switch

Not OLED, not interested.
no OLED no buy imo
